I don't think it has dawned on him, yet - I think that he was too flustered to think quite that clearly, at that point in time. He's still in the "brain nearly shuts down in Melissa's (or what he thinks is Melissa's) presence" phase of their relationship, I think. It may occur to him later, or it may not.
