Hey, I can be threatening from a lot farther away than that. It's just a bit harder to follow through.
'Sides, I only threatened to beat you up after the fourth or fifth time you said "Oh, yeah...I forgot...but did you read SporkMan today?" Well, During your quotes-push long long ago, I found out about JoBeth (through Nukees, I believe). I flipped through the archives a bit and left.
Then I started hanging out in KeenSpace a fair amount, and saw BJ posting, and got attracted by the line "That which does not kill us makes us hungry." So, I went to JF, read through the archives, and was instantly hooked.
Then I caught up on JoBeth and Tonja Steele for completeness.
--Michael
------------------

I think (for obvious reasons) that we'll pass on trying to convert Florida over, though...
-Shannon

Nooooooooooooooooo...cuz JoBeth doesn't think she's funny. A whole state of JoBeths most likely wouldn't 'get it'.
-Shannon

Well, you guys know I'm crazy about JoBeth. She's such a fun character to watch. But last night, I went through the entire Jackie's Fridge Archive. GAWD, you can draw BJ. It was really nice to be ride into a great storyline. I haven't quite figured out how to make my stories better just yet. But all of JoBeth.Net is top notch!!!! That's all I gotta say about that!!!!!
Pauly
------------------

I think you're doing a great job with UA, so if you can improve on it, then hey--that much better!
What I wanted to say in the last post (and I didn't have time, of course) is to listen to conversations (yours and those around you) and pick apart how they build on themselves, how topics shift and tangents form. Comic dialogue is, of course, more streamlined than real conversation, but it should feel natural.
If you come up with a cool line (I came up with "It was an emergency. I panicked." and liked it so much I had to build a strip around it), reverse-engineer it. Back it up and see if you can find a logical progression of lines that set up your cool line.
For the introduction of Gin, where she tries to show Melissa her drawing, I had three lines: "And I love the smell of crayons." and the exchange "Is it true you're blind?"
"It's true." I had to back everything up and figure out where to start. I let my mind drift over the conversation, tightening the dialogue (my first version of the first strip would've been nine panels long!) until I get something I can use. The second strip had a couple lines that I threw out of the first strip, including the gem, "Wow! I wanna be blind too!" which is a typical little kid thing to say. The third strip was an indulgence on my part, and had nothing to do with anything else. It was dialogue for dialogue's sake.
Sometimes I let my mind wander. I try to think how my characters would discuss certain topics (Jackie & Ada in the adult bookstore, or Gin explaining her view on art) or I start with a line and launch a conversation from it (Gin: "What's it like to be black?").
It all depends on your inspiration for the strip. The more defined your characters are, the easier it will be to come up with dialogue for them, because their own voices will start to show through on their own (I'm happier with my recent dialogue than with the sometimes forced dialogue from 1995). Writing for Tonja Steele here and there is a blast, since Joey's characters are all extremely well defined and very specific in their values, goals and morals.
The difference with Jackie's Fridge, from a joke standpoint, is that I'm never trying to write a gut-busting punchline. I'm more interested in a running dialogue between characters than a good zinger--but of course, if I can come up with a zinger, I'll use it! It's just kind of liberating to not worry about being funny.
I hope I managed to convey SOMETHING of value with this bloated, rambling post.

Wow! Now that's a compliment! Thanks, Pauly! And guess what? You haven't even seen the GOOD stuff yet! Come to think of it....neither have I....
As for storylines, practise your conversation. When I write, I try to get a dialogue going between characters, and then break it down into three to five exchanges (Jackie says something; Ada replies to it--that's panel one...) per strip. Sometimes it takes some noodling to end on a zing, and sometimes I don't even bother (depends on the length of the story arc).
It also helps to be able to sit down with someone and just talk as the characters would. Joey and I will start with an idea for Tonja Steele, then say, "What would Tonja have to say about that, and who would be there to reply to her?"
It's fun!

Hey thanks for the tip BJ. My first four strips of Untitled Again,I think were my first ever having a smooth running dialogue like that. I was totally aware of it too. But as time went by, that seems to slowly have faded away. So now I am trying to bring it back. The dialogue in Jackie's Fridge is really great. Hopefully some day, I'll get the hang of it.

Hey Shannon; next time put this on my forum. So I can have more than eighties song references on it..?
It's nice to know that stoopid JoBeth is still getting higher numbers than the other two comics, though. I mean, who needs substance when you have stoopid? Works for the new president...
23 year old comic artist found dead, apparently from a sarcasm overdose.

I'm trying to remember where I first ran into Jackie's Fridge but I can't remember. It was about a month ago and I read through the whole archive.
Wait, I remember now!! It was in the Keenspace General Forum in the Gay Dropdown thread. Something about one of the characters will be revealed as bi and someone said the fridge and then I decided to read the comic.
------------------

I'm pretty sure if the Fridge had a sexual preference (and it DOESN'T, you guys! geez!) it would probably go for other appliances.
Is there a word for that? And if so, isn't that sad?
