Goddammit! Why am I the first and sometimes the only person to notice that all the Keenspace sites have gone down? And what happened to them telling us what's wrong? What happened to the good ol' days when we'd get the administrator message saying "Sorry that Keenspace fucked up again, here's what's wrong, here's what we're doing to fix it, it'll be working again by blah blah blah." It was always a lot easier to get through these server outages with my hair intact when we'd get those comforting messages. Why won't somebody talk to me? My comic is gone and I'm scared and lonely.

Every Thursday? Hell it seems like my page is going down two to three times each week. Sometimes for only an hour sometimes for several hours.

All these recent "improvements" have cost me about 2000 readers a week.

And would it really be too hard whenever keenspace goes down for the admins to to send off a quick e-mail on the list explaining it? I mean wasn't that the idea behind subscribing to that special mailing list? Nothing fancy just:

Server down < date/time> for < reason>. Estimated time back up < date/time>.

Then at least we get the feeling that they know the system is down and that they're doing something about it. It's better than sitting and wondering why your site is down and how long it will be until it goes up.

Nothing fancy, just:

Sever down 03/21/02 8:30am EST because the gilbert grommet isn't meshing with the filbert flange. Estimated time of normal service 03/22/02 7:30pm EST.

Took all of ten seconds and it would mean so much to so many.

2000 readers?

I can't even get my mom to look at my site.

I think that is a good suggestion about the filbert flange and stuff.

I think I know why nobody responds to Lozerz Erik. It is because of the foul language in EVERY post and it is obnoxious. I know of another Keenspacer who politely notifies the admin with a post that states when the site went down and asks for an explanation. I know, from other e-mails, that he is frustrated but he is always respectful of the Keenspace admin. The service is free, for GodSakes!!! Even if you are paying for it, being respectful says a lot!

Nevertheless, I find Losers Erik's posts to be entertaining, if not worth anything.

Later...
Paul

Another thing that might be nice, whenever possible if something is down can the traffic be directed to a "This webpage is temporarily unavailable due to technical difficulties/systems upgrades, please check back later".

This would help squash all the "Oh my god! Keenspace has gone out of business" rumours that always get circulated on the chatrooms whenever there is a "temporary" outage of keenspace services.

Actually, I agree with Erik. The downtimes are regrettable, yes, of course, and of course, we need to be more understanding and polite when expressing our dissatisfaction, but a little heads-up or just a note saying "Hey, Keen is down. We don't know how long it will take to fix" would go a long way. I mean, that's why there's an e-mail list, right?

I'm always hoping that my mom doesn't find my site... or my kids for that matter.

I publish one strip a week and had roughly 7000 weekly readers before all the "improvements" started happening and now with Keenspace being down so much of the time my readership has dropped to about 5000 weekly readers.

That is, I hope my kids do not find my site also, not that I hope my mom doesn't find my kids. She's always welcome to visit with the grandchildren. Infact she can take them overnight anytime she wishes. For a week even... or two...

Dear sweet god my wife and I would just like a little "us time"! Is that too much to ask for?

Ermmm... but as I was saying. Being in the dark when keenspace goes down really sucks. Having your readers think your comicstrip no longer exists because the server can't be found everytime the try to read it also sucks. Some way of reassuring both the comic artists and the readers that something is being done and the problem will eventually be fixed would be really, really, good.

Almost as good as when your mom takes the grandchildren off your hands for a weekend so you and your wife can finally break out the elaborate bondage gear.

Only to find that Granny and the kids found it and took it with them...

Oh. Sorry. What were we talking about?

Just curious- how did you arrive at that figure of 7,000 readers a week. Is that from the webalizer page, and if so is that pages, visitors or sites, or a different method?

Extreme Tracker's unique visitor counter.

I never bother with the Webalizer tracker except the page that tells me how much each individual page on my site has been accessed each month.

The problem is that when keenspace goes down, the wranglers can't do anything about it because they can't log-in and tell it to smarten up or anything.

We have to wait for someone with access to the physical machine to do something, and with the current yahoogroups situation, by the time we say anything, the problem is resolved.

And no, we can't replace all the sites with "keenspace is temporarily down", because it's the physical server at that IP address that has gone down, If we were to do something like that, keenspace would have to be down for at least 4 days, 2 days for the DNS to repoint to the "unavailable" message server and 2 days to repoint back.

ALL the keenspace accounts go down at the same time, because they are ALL on the same server. http://www.keenspace.com is on keenspot's server, forums.keenspace.com is on a separate server.
