What's up with Meighan?

Yeah...I was hoping to see the Holocaust exhibit when I went there over the last vacation, but it wasn't up yet...-_-;;

And yes, Eustace was a little prig at first - wrapped up in himself, obsessed with the 'modern world', and with remarkably little sense at first - but he first came in in "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader", about four books after "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"...are you maybe thinking of Edmund?

Eustace was a cousin to the original four, Edmund *was* one of the original four, and he was taken in by the Witch for a bit...that's why he was the only one without a 'Christmas-present'.

Stu strikes me as more like Eustace than Edmund...which means that, with a little application of just desserts, maybe even Stu could become a redeemed member of the group.

He just needs to figure out how to see life through a Fan's eyes...

My only comment is that I'm not that naive, and I do realise that the leather dominatrix thing is a classic...

but I can't imagine how anything Nazi would be a turn-on.

It's been argued that the Nazis chose those uniforms because they were a turn-on. There's lots of subtle sexual imagery in Nazi paraphenalia, along with the psuedo-mystical crap. Hit;er was a master of marketing. In another reality, he would have been a major player on Madison Avenue.

There's also the appeal of the forbidden.

And of course, basic black is always fashionable.

Oh, regarding Nazi homophobia, here's a fun fact. The Jews, the Communists, the Gypsies, and so forth were liberated from the concentration camps if they survived until the allies reached them. The homosexuals were transferedt to different prisons.

Here's another. The Nazi position paper in the 1920s explaining why the Partei opposed gay rights reads very much like the US military position paper from the early 80s explaining why homosexuals were unfit for military service.

And people wonder why I get emotional about politics.

I always figured that Meighan was trying to put up some kind of front. Looking at her words and actions when she joined the club, it looked to me like she was making a conscious effort to come off as the "bad", and experienced character. (Guess she didn't know too much about Alisin.) Yet, when she does finally get some casual, no consequences sex, she complains about how empty it was. If she was really like she was presenting herself, I'd think that she'd either be used to, or wouldn't care about such a thing. From this, I would guess that she's actually relatively new to being sexually active, and is trying to come off as being experienced. Also, from the "that wasn't a line", train of thought, and her reaction to Alisin shouting, I'd think that she seems a little desperate. But then again, maybe I'm just projecting such things because I don't like her much; due to how dismissive she seems to be to the other Fans.

I got a load of new insight into Meighan today when I was flipping through my comics. For those of you without the books just go check out the party at Kath's at the beginning of TMDG. Rikk trying to pick up on Meaghan is simply HILARIOUS now that we know she's lesbian.

Okay, much to comment on;

One thing to remember is that the Nazi fetish has nothing to do with real Nazis, anymore than overpower/rape fantasies have anything to do with real rape. The allure is that of sexualized evil (or evil sexuality?), and of the forbidden. People don't fantasize about G.I.s, or the KGB, or even the MIB nearly so much as those darn "Nazis", who carry all kinds of cultural weight. Your lover wearing a Nazi hat is not the same as a real Nazi, or being a skinhead; it's role-play, that's all. You can't picture a kind hearted american GI wielding a whip and demanading sex, can you? Well maybe, but that's more disturbing than sexy, if you see what I mean. With Nazis, there's no cognitive dissonance--they are the avatars of evil (and hence sex-loving) authority.

And of course, the BDSMers of the world indulge in all kinds of fantasy--not just the Nazi one. Cowboys and Indians, Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew, Superheroes, you name it. T's using shorthand.

Hmmm, apart from that, Stu would have to show some redeeming qualities to be Eustace (who is from the Voyage of the Dawn Treader, yes) and at the moment he's been painted as irredeemable. Eustace was a fairly comic, spoiled character at first, rather than outright bad. Stu verges on cliche--so far, that is.

And Meighan? Bottom, I'd say. And a needy one at that. Perform this thought experiment; Who on earth would she ever top? I find that person hard to imagine.
