Ok, like... say I wanted two characters to sing a verse of 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' (like on a kareoke stage or something) in a strip. Do I first have to get permission from Bonnie Tyler or the record company to reproduce the lyrics?
(I know that there are parody rights, but I'm not parodying in this instance.)
Also, is it hard to obtain such permission?
Like... I don't want to get sued (or get KeenSpace sued for that matter), but it's also kind've a neat strip. IMO, anyway.
Um... anyway, thanks... =)
.Rae

I'm not a lawyer, so I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe it would be okay as long as you give credit where credit is due, and acknowledge the copywrite. This in addition to the fact that this is a webcomic and not a rerecording, you shouldn't have any problems. But I reiderate that I am NOT a lawyer, nor do I play one on TV, that this is merely an opinion and not to be considered as legal advise, that the primary party in said agreement yada yada yada, always read the fine print
------------------

Just one verse (words w/o music) with credit is fine -- fair use and all that.
------------------

Ok, sounds like I'm covered. =) Someone else also told me I could even claim parody use even if I'm not mocking it.
--Although, if any KeenSpace admins want to strenuously object, now would be a good time. ;)
Thanks guys,

One or two lines is fair game.. But GIVE Credit where credit is due. Comics like Blue Monday from Oni Press constantly does it.
Ah classes in Copywrite policy. the most borring yet most refered to class in college
------------------

I fully intend to give credit. =) If I have Rae doing kareoke, it's a song I'd sing if I had any talent... and... usually almost exclusively an eighties song. Hmm.

------------------
