How weirdly coincidental... my site's doing the EXACT same thing.
Damn, I'm screwed.
I made sure all the files were right, copies were there FOR the replacement, everything was great... but it appears that the scripts will update my dailytemplate file but not my indextemplate one. Why?!
------------------

Yeah this is disheartening to start off with. I plan on releasing my strip January 1st and I'd like to make sure that the site works properly. I already have a pretty good fanbase for my work and I don't want to deliver a semi-there daily strip for them. I appreciate the Free hosting though, and I know that I shouldn't complain if I'm not shelling out dough. I'm hoping to only stay on Keenspace until I can wedge my way into Keenspot, but I know they both work hand in hand, and when one is down the other usually is as well. If any tech is reading this, please let us know when this will be fixed..thannks
------------------

Hey guys, my index page hasn't been updating the past two nights. I edited it, then Ftp'ed and then requested the update, like the instructions say, but it still shows the old template there. Let me know if there is some sort of technical problems going on. I doubt I did anything wrong this time.
------------------
D.J. Coffman http://efh-u.8m.com
Ben: It looks like the problem was the first thing I mentioned -- the link to indextemplate.html in your public_html directory was missing. You should try to avoid doing anything in the public_html directory if you can avoid it, and only upload things to workspace. Anyway, I've reinstated the link and it should be working fine now.
...now on to Gravity's problem.
The problem is that you don't have any comics uploaded. When you first started your site, this wasn't a problem. But after you started using the ***calendar*** tag, Autokeen crashes trying to create a calendar with no dates. I'll have to fix that subroutine so that if there are no comics, it won't attempt to create a calendar.
To more properly test the layout of your page, you might consider uploading a "test" comic...
------------------

Uhm there are comics in the comics folder ready to go, but not till January 1st. I did do an smaple strip and just put it in the images folder and named it sample.gif to preview on the first page. When I get back home tonight I'll load in some current strips and test the daily update. If you can fix whatever it is I'd appreiate it. I'll get rid of the Calendar thing for now in the html and relaod the page tonight.

------------------

Gav, I owe you one. Thanks a lot for the help, and I'll be sure to be careful in the future.
------------------

I'm gonna try to upload a current strip as well as a few earlier dates so the calendar can kick in. Hope it works!--
------------------

First: You're welcome, Ben.
I actually fixed Autokeen so that it at least doesn't crash if there's no comic. However, the resulting calendar was quite strange. It's for December, 1968, and the "Next" calendar is also December. Plus, it starts with Day 0. But, it will at least work, so new users can see how it looks.
Incidentally, it can be a bit tricky to delete a "sample" strip now that I think of it. The strips are copied from workspace/comics into public_html/comics, so if you want to delete a strip, that's the one time you need to venture into the public_html directory.
I don't know if that's documented.
------------------

I don't believe there are any technical problems. Could you let us know which sites you are talking about? Often what happens is that for some reason, you upset the link in public_html that points to your indextemplate.html file. This could happen if you accidentally uploaded indextemplate.html into public_html instead of workspace. Also, many people have problems if they mistakenly upload indextemplate.html into their webpages directory.
------------------

Fish & Worm, my comic http://fishandworm.keenspace.com
I put the indextemplate file as what would normally be the actual page, so every file should be right in the ftp. but the ACTUAL file in the workspace directory won't update to replace the VIEWED file. Ugh! But thanks... feel free to hack around my ftp area, I don't care.
------------------

This seems to have struck me, as well...

I've updated twice with a strip in place, and nothing after several hours.

Maybe I'm just impatient?

In any case, my strip is Power Lines.

Thanks!
Let's see, aside from a minor spelling error, I don't see any obvious problem...here are some things to check for, though:
Make sure your comic is dated properly for a date today or before (ie 20001226.jpg) and has been FTP'd into the comics folder in the workspace directory. Make sure you've spelled your tags right, using the correct number of asterisks, as per the tagtorial. Also make sure you've FTP'd the most current model of indextemplate. When you manually update, expect up to five minutes per person in the queue.
These are all based on the errors I made in the beginning. My begging for help got copious response from helpful old-timers. I guess since I've been here since OCtober, I might count...
------------------

Actually, Kitch, we deactivated your site intentionally.
At some point, you had used a combination of ***tags*** in conjuction with having no comic strips uploaded that was causing the updating script to hang up, thus no one's page after yours was getting updated until either Nate or me could un-hang it. Nate says he removed the ***tags*** from your indextemplate.html and informed you of the problem and that you shouldn't use them on the main page without comics in place (or until I could get a chance to fix the bug).
Then, apparently, you uploaded the same ***tags*** back again, which caused everyone's update to hang up a second night. Since both Nate and me were out those two nights, clearing the problem was rather inconvenient each night. At that time, I decided to deactivate your page until the bug could be fixed (it being Xmas, I haven't had a chance as I've been traveling). Nate told me he would inform you, but he's been traveling all over the place this season just like me, so it might have slipped his mind.
Once the bug is fixed, I'll reactivate your page.
------------------

Oh, OK. Sorry! I thought the problem was just with the distinction of the day/week tags, so I changed them back to the day tags, not knowing they needed to not be any at all in place.

I shouldn't have any extra ***tags*** hanging around now, though, and I have a strip in place ready to go, so when the bug is fixed, it should be fine.

Thanks for the reply - and for the help!
[This message has been edited by Kitsch (edited 12-27-2000).]

Still no luck...

I renamed the strip(20001227.gif) in my workspace/comics directory, and uploaded and downloaded the indextemplate.html to make sure it was current, but still nothing...

I have to be missing something here. Any other tips?

Hey, this is just a curiosity, not a badgering...

Are there any time estimates to getting that bug fixed, and my account reactivated? There's no hurry at all, just a curiosity.

Thank you!
