I'm not saying I'm the Freak Out At Tests type. But most of the people at my school are.
I'm the stay up ridiculously late writing/composing/drawing badly type. Whose grades do not compromise an A average. And I don't care so much. Writing is more fun anyway, especially when publishers are involved.

Ooh, did I hear the word "compose"?! If you get a chance, Mitya, you should record something and post it on here, I'd be really interested in hearing something. And about the "People tell me I'm too smart to want to major in music" part; I know how you feel. I was going to be a physics major until last year (11th grade) when I decided that I can't play music unless I am completely dedicated to it. So yeah, if you get a chance, record something and put it up here! Or if you just have something written, I could record it when I get my keyboard, which has a 16-track synthesizer on it... mmm....keyboard...
Heh, of course, then again you could be like me, and be smart and NOT worry about test scores or really much of anything relating to school, but rather spend your time pondering the "issues" and having brilliant epiphanies which nobody will listen to because you don't have a "mainstream" education. Or, better yet, you could spend your time learning to play ska songs on electric bass and fiddling around with synthesizers and drawing comics.

Yay. Actually, I enjoy being smart, because at least this way I get to be a free-thinker.

Whoa. It's probably not good enough to be interesting, really. I'm definitely an amateur. If I were to major in music, I probably wouldn't even be accepted as a composer. But if someone ever sends me the recording made of a Redwall song I did this summer, I'll figure out how to get it here.
As for IQ tests, terribly tedious things. SATs are just as bad, only IQ tests have far weirder stuff on them. I scored pretty high on all of these, though not to insane levels. Read, not even close to 1600 on the SAT. I know these things can't measure a person. They have nothing to do with identity or character at all. They really test how one applies what they MIGHT know in a stressful situation.
I really hate tests. They should be abolished. Bwahaha.

Smart? Yes, but, I've known total potheads with better recall capabilities than me.
Tests? Depends on what. With just about anything right brained, I could get an A or, more likely a B. A C, more likely D, if it required more analytical thinking. Mathematically, I'm a Forrest Gump. But really, I do so much better if I just read the book because I feel like reading the book.
If you want, you could take 25,000 to go to college, or, you could take 25.00, and read the same text book and get the same information.
The only prob. is, if you want anyone to even look at you, and what you're capable of. You need that little scrap of paper called a diploma(I'm talking college here.).
And while I'm eschewing info, college is not about learning. What getting a college diploma tells people is that 'Yes, I can put up with bs, and cater to a professor's ego.'

Intelligence is relative to whatever meter stick you attempt to hold to it. There is a distinction between wit, intelligence, and for lack of a better word memory. I do not see how you can claim that tests or anything of that nature is a measure of intelligence. Even SAT's that great measure to which all recognize has been found to be "racial" meaning that people who were raised in another country do poorly on it. Is intelligence a great burden when you are not even sure what it is?
To make the arguement even more interesting there are idiot savants who are capabible of amazing acts of mental agility but cant tie their own shoes (anyone seen 'Rainman'?) At what point are we smart or dumb, can we point at that and say, "He is dumb and she is a genius?"
Pop culture (tv and movies) would have us believe that the intelligent are the types of people who can whip radios out of coconuts or are able to make use of their environment to resolve dilemmas (sp), but I would define that as resourcefulness. How about the ablity to argue? That is not intelligence but only requires that one be stubborn and unwilling to listen to others ( )
Is it intelligence that is the burden or the perceptions of other placed on you that are a burden?
Intelligence is relative.
Go see Dr. Strangelove.
I like pie.

I like your oppinion Mr Rcawley.
Did someone here ever did an IQ test or something similar?
I've always wondered how they work, cause I can't imagine that it would be possible to ask any questions referring to certain knowledge. For example when it's asked, "What is the Gretchen Question in the 'Tragedy Of Faust' by Goethe?", what you do then when the person asked never actually read the book?
And that's a problem you can use for nearly every category you can find in "Who wants to be a millioaire". A single person simply can't know every book or history fact or sports event.
So what's left then for these IQ test? All I can think of are these "What number follows logically seen next?" questions (what's actually a quite amusing thing, I most of the time never get these, but have been one of the better ones in the advanced math class anyway).
I think I for my person would define intelligence with awareness and ability to make conclusions. How many things around yourself you notice, how good are you in predicting the outcome of certain events, how fast you grasp a concept or an idea that is new to you. But that's a hard thing to be tested for, is it?

I must say.... I agree with you guys. I mean... Personally, I think all standardized tests are biased and they really can't prove anything except how well you've conformed to what the public school system has programmed into the rest of it's victims. I'm homeschooled, you see, and I scored 1030 on the SAT. However, I'm TERRIBLE at taking tests, and I'm too poor to afford a fancy-schmancy graphing calculator. (By the way, I believe now that Texas Instruments has a deal going on with the publishers of high school math textbooks, which causes it to come out that you CAN'T solve certain problems in them unless you have a special calculator.)
And really... I believe that I AM a very intellectual person. I mean, I know just enough about any given subject that I can hold an intelligent conversation about it. Plus, I have plenty of areas in which I have rather specialized knowledge. For example, I know about how to work synthesizers and sequencers and stuff like that, I can figure otu and play VERY complex songs on the electric bass, I can draw comics, I can build webpages (believe it or not), and I've memorized the words to almost more songs than I can count.... But that stuff isn't really important to anybody but me.
Go beyond that, I like I memorize scripture. I see things in a deeply spiritual manner, I like to share what I have with others, I like to bring joy to other people. I have a deep capacity for loyalty and forgiveness, I KNOW what love is. In my life, I see good things happening, and I try not to let the dumb things drag me down. I'm happy, free, and in love. I don't have any PLANS for my life, to speak of, but it's okay, because I trust that I'm going to be taken care of. I don't WORRY about school and stuff, and I really don't CARE what other people think. I'll be kind to everyone, but I won't let the system get me under its thumb.
Life is good. Life is for living and helping others and speaking the truth. Not for trying to be successful. If I fail in the world's eyes, what does it matter, because I've found true joy and happiness, and MY hope is not in temporary riches, but in things that will last.
Yay.

I know people like that. I often want to smack them in the face. But I don't. I'm happy with my B+ average, and the people who need As or they'll die are just silly. The only time I'm not happy with a grade is when I know I could have done better on it. Or when an evil teacher grades down because he doesn't like my writing style or topic...*erk*
Yeah. I wanna be a musician or a writer. I sure as heck don't need Calculus. But they're making me take it anyway. Curses.

ugh, speaking of math. we got OUR graphing calculater and i HATE HATE HATE them! WHHHHYYY need we know y=Ax(2)+Bx+C ?!?!?! I AM AN ARTIST! I DO NOT NEED MATH. i want to switch into Geography so bad, but i cant. i HATE alegebra II!
oh yeah. this really ticked me off today in class:
this kid john talks ALOT. and he's REALLY stupid, like common sense stupid. he says stupid things and is REALLY immature. it drives me NUTS. what really grinds my nerves is the fact that he is the second top student in our classroom, with an A-, while i'm 8th in class with a B-. and he BRAGS about it. he's like "WOAH! look what i got! i'm so smart!" and then he wants to compare scores. "OH! look i got higher on this than you! haha!" and then he tries to make it into a competition. "what? how'd you get a better score than me! i gotta beat you!" (yes, he seriously says rhis stuff). just today, we got our progress reports, and he was like "AWWW! i got an A-! that SUCKS! what'd you get? hey, who's number one in our class? oh i'm gonn beat you! i'm gonna have better grades than you!".
MY GOOOSH! errrrr. i hate when people are like that. god. if your smart COOL, but dont be so EGOTISTIC about it. i mean, yeah i consider myself pretty ruddy brilliant for my age, people tell me i'm mature and insightful and open minded. i have a talent, i guess, and i'm open to learning, i like learning, i think its fun. i know its crazy. but i do, i like to do reports and stuff, but only if the topic is important. i know a ton of scientific classification of the cat family.
bloody USELESS to life, just as much as that math equation up there ^.
see, in my opinion, i think school should teach us the basics, then give us classes to what our talent is, or what profession we're chasing.
i dunno, it drives me nuts alot.
