I know J. Kerouac used an Underwood, and I'm fairly certain (but with nagging doubts) that both S. Ginsberg, and H.S. Thompson used one also.

Actually, CCQ, I was thinking pretty much the same thing, though you phrased it far more eloquently than I could have. And who says *I* would have to clean up after people's heads exploding?
