I once got a really flattering hate mail when I was at University of Miami at Coral Gables, FL. I did a strip for the University paper that was making fun of the President of the school. The complaint was from the Vice-President of the school. She was complaining about my portrayal of women. There was no mention of the fact that I drew the President with a wandering eye(I was expecting complaints for that instead). The funniest part was that compared to the women of Miami, I downplayed the beautiful babe quite a bit. Ultimately, the school newspaper retaliated to my defense, and I never heard from her again.
But I haven't gotten any hate mail on Keenspace. Although, not too many people like "Untitled Again" here at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sometimes it's difficult to please an artist.
Pauly
------------------

I haven't gotten any hate mail, but like most of you I'm using the synthetic substitute of self-directed complaints running along the lines of "Boy! I suck a lot!" It's like the plastic nipple of negative attention!
------------------

It seems odd that right out of the box, I got two hate mails for my comic, when it's only been up for a couple of days, AND hasn't even been linked by a big site yet, AND had the worst launch in history.
But I don't really care. I personally think it's cool that I got hate mail. It's sort of not cool but still it's cool. It's like.. the wrong kind of attention getting, but it's still attention!
What are your stances on hate mail?
===============

I've never gotten any hate-mail, either. Okay, there is this one friend of mine who is an attorney, and began to object to my objectification (and gratuitous killing) of attorneys (in the strip. IN THE STRIP), but he did this via AIM, and we had a nice breakfast meeting over at the IHOP, and I decided to accelerate the introduction of the "good-guy" lawyer by a month or so.
The more popular you get, the more likely you are to get hatemail, unless you do something just rabidly offensive in the strip, in which case you can probably get hate mail from one reader out of 100.
Incidentally, a friend of mine writes a regular "rant" for a local newspaper, and gets hate mail all the time. For a good time, have a look at http://www.ericdsnider.com/snide/index.html and read the columns with the "Angry Letters" blurb next to them. He posts all angry letters on the site, and usually dissects them for your reading pleasure.
------------------

I got a "SporkMan sucks." letter once. And my friend Dennis loathes Basil Flint, but I don't think that counts as hate *mail*.
------------------

I would have thought my whole-hearted embrace of drugs, my profuse and unnessecary swearing, my complete lack of any redeeming social value, and my frequent slurs against minorities and religion would have gotten me at least one piece of hate mail by now. No such luck. And if you can't beat that terrible list of offensive qualities, you're outta luck, Chuck. Stuck without a buck in the land of pickup trucks. Motherfuck.
------------------

I never fufilled my goal of hate mail when I did the strip in college, so I'm looking at the 'Space as a second chance.

Of course, when I get it going, I'm also hoping to get more then the 'circle of friends' readership I had then - after all, most of them agreed with me...

Oh well. At least maybe I can get 'must you use such language?' mail.
[This message has been edited by Kitsch (edited 01-03-2001).]

I've done fine here, although on an old web comic I did, I got a few emails that basically said "you suck" or "your art isnt good at all", but the intriguing thing is that whenever I replied to these emails it would just get sent back to me. How much time do these people have on their hands?? Damn jealous bastards.
~Steve
------------------
