My storyline dropdown doesn't work!!!!!
Hello,
Everytime I update my dropdown.txt, it stops working on the page. I then have to go in and totally manually erase the dropdown from the index template and then reinstall it to make it work. Only this time that didn't even help. What am I supposed to do? What is the secret method for doing storyline dropdowns.
Pauly
Pauly
------------------

I changed it back, and still no luck. I think either Tirdun is right about my simple text document being slightly altered and therefore not able to be read, or There is some error in the server between my data folder and whatever is supposed to read from it. Or maybe I'm just totally wrong, and have no idea what I'm talking about. I'd think that whether or not there was an "L" at the end of html, it would still show up on the dropdown, it would just have a bad link. Any ideas? Thanks for all your help by the way.
Pauly
------------------

Hmm...there's one thing I can guess...but I'm just going to post my drop-down code. See if this helps...
POCKET: Site Guide/Storyline Quick-Jump,/

Hey Calliope,
I'm still confused like you wouldn't believe. My text file was practically the same as yours. But I decided to try to put yours as my dropdown text. When I checked out my page. Your dropdown was working fine. I noticed that your text file had a smaller font. So I brought mine in shrinking the text, and it now works again. It's really weird. I think the exchange of dropdown texts might have just defaulted the template allowing it to start over with an all new Untitled Again dropdown. So I am not entirely sure that shrinking the font had anything to do with it.
Oh, I also deleted the hyphens from the front of each topic. It's possible that that made all the difference.
I am going to try and add something now to see if an update screws up again.

IT WORKED!!!!!!!

Thank you so much Calliope, your help was priceless. I think the problem might have been the hyphens.
Thanks,

I've never had any problems either...
The tutorial is kinda convoluted, though. Took me a couple tries to get it.
Can you give us more details on the problem? If all else fails, I'll post my dropdown here so you can see how mine works...it might help.
------------------

Well, I edit the dropdown.txt on Simple Text, and then I put it in the workspace/data folder. My indextemplate.html uses the tag ***storyline*** to display the dropdown.
The text file pretty much looks like this(simplified):
(beginning here)
-Intro:The Discovery,/d/20001112.html, 11/12/2000
-Second file,/d/20001113.html, 11/13/2000
-Third File,/d/20001114.html, 11/14/2000
UA STORYLINES
(ending here)
If you check out the website, it actually only shows the first one, and none of the others.
I am confused. I was thinking that maybe it will correct itself when my next strip actually updates, which is tomorrow. I tried to manually update using regular, index template, and full update buttons in the members site maintenance thing, but those didn't work. Me so confused!!!!
Pauly
------------------

Eighty-six the second batch of dates. All you need is the /d/yyyymmdd.htm(l).
Try changing that, and see how it works...
Oh wait, one more thing. You may want to type "Untitled Again Storyline,/" or something like that at the top. It may or may not affect things...
------------------

No Luck... I deleted the extra dates, and removed the "L" from html. But that didn't work. I've always had that slash after UA STORYLINES, but I forgot to mention it.
I think the strangest thing is that my text file has worked in the original way that I've written it, but when I update it(meaning add a new storyline, in the exact same format) It stops working.

Um...if you have .html extentions, use .html.
If it's .htm, use .htm. I should have made that clear...sorry. I'm something of a Web novice...
How was it originally written, before you updated it?
------------------

Guess what!!!!! It happened Again!!!!! Every time I try to add another line. My drop down goofs up!!!!! I checked the source of my html on IE 5 and compared it to other sites with the dropdown. I noticed the word "Selected" after the last link on the others, but it was after the first word on mine. For some reason, it thinks that my first link on my dropdown is my last.
I tried putting calliope's in again the way I did before, and it didn't work this time. It's so weird. Anyways, I uploaded the text file to my image directory so anyone can check it out for me and say what they think the problem is.
Pauly
------------------

Thanks Josh. I didn't try yours, because it is pretty much the same as mine. There is just some glitch somewhere in either my text editor or in my javascript for the dropdown. I think I'm gonna just make one like the normal keenspace dropdown where you don't have to press go. I don't know how to do it, but I'm gonna surf the web and learn. If you have the time I'd appreciate any help on doing this.
Thanks Josh.
Paul

Okay, great, own dropdown. That's good. But the Keenspace one isn't IN JavaScript. It's in CGI so that the four or five remaining no-javascript people on Earth can still use it.
If you want, I can manually create a working CGI one in about ten minutes, and all you would have to do is paste it wherever you used the ***storyline*** tag before.
Just a thought. Adios.
