Hey, I'm wondering how I can get more pageviews. I know my comic's name is getting out there, because my hits are huge, but I need to get pages!!! Anyone know?
------------------

I THINK, and this is arrogant random guessing, that I got a large number of readers from Chris's link to me at Superosity. Why would someone with a good comic link to a bad comic? I just happened to use his shirt in a minor image. Although I haven't really gone about doing too much of it, I hear that FanArt is supposed to be a goldmine for getting people attracted to your 'site. Also, then, presumably your Fright Nights and Party 2001's should work to a lesser extent. I don't remember the last time I got a referrer from the Ice Breaker.
------------------

I don't know how much of this you've done, but after I aggressively whored myself out to Top 100/50 sites, my visits and, consequently, pageviews, went up. Way up, in fact, from roughly 55/day at the beginning of the month to 100/day now. Sure, that's not a whole lot of pageviews from a comparative standpoint, but it does represent a 100% increase.
I think guest strips/fan art/event participation is another way to increase readership. Anything that can get the name of your strip out there and draw people in. If only ten percent of the people who stop by your strip when they see the link somewhere else stick around and become regular readers, that's that many more readers you didn't have, and wouldn't have gotten otherwise.
------------------

The most popular webcomic in both The Shire and Rivendell!
Second place in Mordor, but only behind "The Family Circus."

Promotional strategies that have worked for me:
1) Linked sigs in discussion boards (especially non-comic boards where the strip would be interesting--sci-fi boards work for me)
2) Face-time plugs with friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc
3) Fan-art/cameos
4) Button exchanges
5) Top-whatever lists
By my third month of Schlocking I'd racked up around 150 regular viewers. At that point I got 'Spotted, and the number jumped to about 500. Then I got Newsboxed on the 'Spot, and the number jumped to about 1000, which, with a reasonable margin of error is where I am today.
So, the Newsbox and Keenspot did more for my pageviews than any of my own efforts did. Still, by reviewing my logs, I can see that my efforts have accounted for roughly 20% of my viewers.
The one thing I have not done is leverage my press contacts locally to try and get an article done about "Local cartoonist hits the world-wide-web" . I know it would be good for my page views, and I expect it would bring hundreds (maybe thousands) of new readers into the world of Web comics, where they will be easy pickings for better strips than mine.
------------------

I've become very iffy about Top 100 lists. They simply don't seem to work for me. The whole thing in a Top 100 list is that it rewards those who are already doing well. I know that when I visit a Top 100 list I pick one that sounds good within the Top 5 because they're the most reliable otherwise they wouldn't have so many hits. And so on... Also, you need a catchy (or in Dave Kelly's case staggeringly shocking) phrase or somesuch for it to work at all.
------------------
I'm getting really lazy about changing this signature. NERDZ.
