I counted the numbers using Microsoft Word's line numbering about two weeks ago and got 276.

quote:
Originally posted by jack spencer:

They need to subdivide. By genre, alphabetically, oldest to newest -- although that would mean abandoning the randomizing system they have now -- but they need to do SOMETHING. There's just too much info to slog through at once.
I recommend either by genre or age, especially since some people do look for new comics.

I agree. Subdividing would let me know just what kind of comic I'm about to read.
--jwh
------------------

Genre would be my recommendation, and if not that probably a simple alphabetic division would be next best.

There'd be a huge problem subdividing into genres. Some strips would fit in both the "humor" and "sci-fi" genres, for instance.
------------------

Then list them in both, or let the writer choose.
And I know exactly what you're talking about. How to describe my own comic in terms of genre? Well, let's see..
-comedy
-drama
-war
-fantasy
-science-fiction
-adventure
However, if I had to squeeze it into one genre, I'd have to go with science-fiction, because that will be the most pervasive theme (don't have enough of a story archive yet to really show that, though).
I still say it's an improvement over the current situation, in which people who don't have the patience to browse through a list of 270+ comics (and can you really blame them?) are missing out on some really good stuff. We need some sort of solution.

This looks like an excellent place to post a link to the Local Group Project. I've seen three comics so far that are doing something like this (my own, Floor 13, and Zortic). We may be able to evolve an order from the chaos.
--Michael
------------------

All I saw was a big debate like the one we're having now. So what then do you propose for the solution?
I think that if a genre-sort is going to be done, a comic should appear on the list for ALL genres it incorporates. That means some comics (such as mine) will be all over the place, while others may only be on one or two lists.
The big problem is that we're not going to find a solution that leaves everyone happy. I'm not too thrilled about the newsbox now, because I'm afraid someone's going to click to something from my site and find something that offends him -- and then he turns around and blames ME. I put up a disclaimer, but somehow I don't think that's enough to cover my butt from someone ELSE's work...
And now I'm meandering. Great. I need sleep.

I think a search engine would be the way to go. You could still have the complete list; having sorted by age, update frequency, last update, genre, aphabetically, or whatever. You could also search for comics that are "about robots" or "medievil".
Of course this would only work well if everybody knows what meta lists are.
------------------

I didn't really look at Zortic until after I'd proposed Local Groups, but his middle link section is basically what I'm talking about, and I just don't see the harm in this. (Note that the list is not complete. I don't think it would be possible for each cartoonist to stay that up-to-date. But by jumping between sites, you might be able to hit them all.)
--Michael
------------------

This goes back to one of my favorite posts on the egroup. It seems that everyone can argue with using subjective terms to divide the comics. I like using random colors. "Gold," "fuchsia," etc. No one complain and the list gets divided. Sure, it doesn't tell the reader anything but neither, in the end, does "science-fiction."
------------------

I said this a couple of months ago, and the story has not changed much since I got 'spotted.
KeenSpace is not a promotional engine--it's a hosting service. What y'all are asking for from Crosby and company is a bit like asking Geocities to promote your free website.
Sure, the KeenSpace list is unwieldy. It's about seven times larger than the KeenSpot list, and THAT's unwieldy too. I get most of my walk-in traffic (now that I'm on the 'spot) from the big promotions, like the KeenSpot Newsbox, QuickKeen, or the random spotlight--not from the list.
If you want visitors to your site, you have to self-promote. I'm happy to be promoted by the 'Spot, but I'm not giving up my self-promotion efforts. The Funny Papers Button Exchange works (slowly, but it works), as do the various top-whatever lists (again, slowly, but they work). You can also incent readers to plug your strip in high-traffic areas (slashdot leaps to mind) by offering them free artwork or something.
If, however, you are interested in the READER's experience, rather than just boosting your hits, then you have probably figured out that a 'Space-only index doesn't serve the reader too well. A while back I suggested a system similar to the BlockBuster Video "ClairV" system for comics, that would recommend new comics to you based on how much you liked other comics. This system would need to have all 2000+ active webcomics in it, and would be devilishly entertaining to maintain. And once readers found it, they'd be on it again, and again, and again.
------------------

Oh, and the list has 947 lines, with 3 lines to each comic (roughly)... the count is up to 315... Wow.

I think that, though there is almost 300 comic SITES on Keenspace, when I look through it for new ones, half of them don't have anything yet and most of the ones that do I realize I don't like after the first one. Anything that's actually good will start to gain a reputation, like Chopping Block or BoxJam's Doodle--everyone talks about them. And THAT'S how I usually decide to look at a strip.
------------------
