FTP questions please help!....so confused.

I am confused already. OK, I've just downloaded smartFTP and it all works fine (probably).
I downloaded the indextemplate page and made a few adjustments and saved it, but I don't know how to transfer it to my site using the ftp. The contents of my local folders, the ones for my computer, are invisible when displayed.
I want to know how to transfer the changed indextemplate.html from my computer replacing the indextemplate.html at keenspace.
Can someone explain using very simple terms how to do this please? <P>------------------

Ignore the local folder bar, It's basically useless. Up the top there should be a local browser button. If there's not have a poke around in view-toolbars.<P>------------------
