Since no one, I think, has access to these statistics I'd like to ask which webcomics that everyone thinks is the most popular. For a couple of weeks, I was sure it was Sluggy. Now I wonder if it's Sinfest. Then, I thought it might be User-Friendly but Iliad, his mother, and his lover are only two unique IP visits (I think there's an infinite number of jokes one could make using that phrase. Nifty, huh?).
More idle speculation, anyone?
------------------
For reference, I'm probably not in "happy face mood" when writing this but I always forget to change the button. Not this sign, though. NERDZ

I think it might be Sluggy. But Sinfest could be close because it has Keenspot to spread it around. I'm not sure but User Friendly and Illiad could be close. So in other words, I don't know.
------------------

I'd assume Sluggy FreeLance. They're a lot more... "general audience" type of thing. SinFest has the type of stuff that might either a) piss people off b) confuse people c) bore little children that have no idea about certian political issues.
But SinFest still rocks. Oh yes.
-Caster

To the best of my knowledge, Sinfest is the the most popular (in terms of page loads) of the 'Spot strips. Also, to the best of my knowledge, it's still well behind Sluggy, PVP, and PennyArcade. I believe these strips don't appear on Top100 lists anywhere because the authors have asked their fans NOT to post them there (I know for a fact Pete Abrams of Sluggy has done just that).
PVP and Penny-Arcade have very specialized audiences (people who play or program computer/console/arcade games), but those audiences are HUGELY into online entertainment, and make up a very, very large segment of the net's webcomic readers. The authors of PVP and Penny-Arcade are currently living off of their cartooning efforts (yes, folks, it CAN be done).
Tycho of Penny-Arcade.com plugged my brother's strip (http://www.randymthoughts.com, a keenspace strip) and generated 400 visits for him. If we assume that one person in 500 follows the random links on our pages (a safe assumption, based on my button exchange stats) then PA had 200,000 visitors that day, and probably half a million page loads. That DAY.
In terms of "longest running" the award goes to Doctor Fun. It's not heavily promoted though, and does not even have its own domain name. Another old-timer is Kevin & Kell, which is unique among the strips I've listed in that it's popular AND it's suitable for newspaper syndication (strictly family humor).
It's important to note during this discussion that KeenSpot has only been around for a few months (well, most of this year, but still...), so there's lots of hill left for the snowball to roll down.
There may be others in the upper echelons (a million+ page loads per month), but I don't know of them. Oh, and if you care, Schlock Mercenary (my offering to the webcomic world) currently gets about 3000 page loads a day, but has climbed to this number very quickly since KeenSpot syndication. Hopefully I'll climb clear through it by a couple of orders of magnitude.
------------------

Yeah, that was the same list that ranked Curtis above Sherman's Lagoon.
The moral of this story? If the world is a popularity contest, then the judges of said contest are retarded morons.
------------------

>>They were ranking it based on influence, longevity, and (for lack of a better word) literary importance.
Oh, I saw *that* list.
It was some group noone had heard of, and
they didn't think Thimble Theater, nor
The Yellow Kid, were in the top 100.
And if I remember right, they listed some
strip (Moon Mullins?) twice.
Oops...
------------------

Another oldie is "Argon Zark" which I used to keep up with (and a recent nostalgic visit affirmed was still "alive") which has been around since '95. I know it has a large following, but I doubt if it's even in the top 10.
My guess is that the super-syndicates are still the top sites. Dilbert likely being one of the top 2 or 3.

Big Panda used to (very tackily) put
estimated hit counts for various very
popular strips.
That was before SinFest existed, but at
the time, User Friendly claimed about 75000
to 80000 hits/day, while goats was around
6000. I don't remember what PvP was.
------------------

Not completely sure, seeing what a random moron I am, but Sluggy was listed among the "Top 100 comics ever" by some important critics group who ranked Peanuts at number 5. (I like Real Life more than PvP anyway, so I dunno.)
------------------
