the trick is to tell the newspapers and stations that all webcomics are related to aliens. they fall for it all the time!

Tim Broderick brought up the idea of
running small ads in student newspapers to
increase readership, and I'm curious what
success anyone has had with similar
ideas.
Here's mine:
In March of this year, a local newspaper
(The Daily Herald - it's a newspaper aimed
at the Chicago suburbs) ran an article on
web comics, and did a couple of paragraphs on
mine, and ran 2 strips. They included my
url. My estimate for increased readership
for the day and next few days after the
article ran: 0.
Now, my experience differs from what might
be the 'norm':
It was a dowdy paper, with a different
demographic than a student newspaper. On the
other hand, the circulation is larger than a
student paper. Plus, it was much better
exposure than a classified ad - they even
ran the strips in blue.
Also, the editors must have thought web
comics were potentially interesting
to their readers.
The url was the long, dumb version of
my old site (geocities/southbeach/pier/4856
or something).
Still, all you had to remember was 'BoxJam'
or even 'doodle' and I'm at the top of
any search engine search.
Basically it didn't work for me (and was
pretty depressing).
What has anybody else tried?
------------------

Boxman:
I wrote to all the local papers here, daily + alternative, as well as the local tv stations (they go nuts for stupid local interest pieces), telling them all about how webcartooning is revolutionizing the comics industry, blah blah blah. I never heard from a damn one of them.
Taking out an ad in the Pitt student paper isn't a bad idea, though. I just didn't want to have to pay cash for my exposure.

------------------

Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say "Ni" at will to old ladies. There is a pestilence upon this land! Nothing is sacred. Even those who arrange and design shrubberies are under considerable economic stress at this point in time.

I just got back from The Gator Times, a student newspaper in my town--I've tried to get them to print my comic, and they said I have to tone down the language and drug use, and use greyscale instead of all the line work. So I did, cause like I always say, 'principles are for those who can afford them,' and I'll be finding out on Monday when the features editor gets back in town.
Wish me luck you crazy bastards!
------------------

I think a magazine like Wizard would be an easy way to advertise Keenspot/keenspace. Maybe the big wigs are already trying this idea.
