Am I popular?

I had 270 visits and 1203 hits for the fine month of September, but i don't know if i should be bragging or ashamed about this! What kind of numbers are the rest of you getting, especially new stuff?
------------------

You asked "Am I popular?". If you were, would you need to ask?
For September I had 42/1272 visits and 134/4004 hits, but that's been my first full month, and most of those are probably me checking to see if everything works. Wait a couple of months and you'll get a clearer picture of how you're doing.
------------------

I started on the 11th; I'm finishing up at around 200 visits and 995 hits, which is a whole lot higher than I had expected.
Of course, I haven't been pushing the Scholars too hard, since I wanted to wait until I revealed the whole high concept in-comic before making a big deal out of it (This should be happening the first or second week of October) -- especially since I'm selling it on the basis of its writing, and it's a storyline-oriented strip.
Your mileage may vary.
--Michael
------------------

Also, if you've signed up for the newsbox, it screws with your hits, since every time your comic shows up randomly in someone else's pages, it counts as a hit for your page (because of it loading the picture).
Same if you've posted a pic to a forum.

I don't go by hits and visits. They're affected drastically by the newsbox. (I'll fix it...)
However, I do get anywhere from 100 to 200 pageviews a day, which is pretty bad. I don't do a lot of promotion, though.
If you DO want to know my hits and visits (which are counted when anyone accesses the newsbox itself AND my comic's picture), they are:
Hits per day: 2728
Visits per day: 685
Total September hits: 81861
Total September visits: 20574
------------------

So the only reason I have 4004 hits is because I often put my logo in my sig. Each time someone loads a thread with it in it, it counts as a hit. And here I was thinking that I was popular.
------------------

Pages is the one that really matters to
the company - it's the one that pays the
bills.
A page is every file that is an htm/html
page. Each one of those implies an ad
display.
That's why they talk about maybe splitting
revenue when your page per month get high.
I hope people don't get too worked up about
this though. Nate, I think Questionable Tales
is interesting, intelligent, and the
ccapriciousness of it works. If you're
really interested in hits, you might let
Scott Keuhner (of Look What I Brought Home,
at KeenSpot), and Dave Kelly (of Living in
Greytown, at KeenSpot) know about your
strip. I get the feeling they would both
appreciate it, and Scott would almost
certainly add it to his LOPOW list if you
asked.
------------------

Perhaps it has to do with the fact that I get a "not authorized" when I try to visit. Or is that what you meant when you said it was down.
[QUOTE]Originally posted by Matt Wilson:

Soupstock is currently down for unknown reasons, and may very well be the first comic to be kicked from Keenspace for whatever reason they might have.

I was referring to Merlin's Crew, actually.
But, yes, Soupstock is down. Noone at Keenspace feels like telling me why or helping either.

As BoxJam said, visits don't really count. I think the vast majority of my visits stem from the NewsBox. You can tell simply by looking at your referrers. If they are mostly other 'Space strip's index pages and they didn't link to you, you're in the same leaky boat as me.
------------------

I'm wondering the same thing, Matt. 'Stock deserves way more readership than it gets.
------------------

For September, I had
Daily average: 55 visits, 139 pages (fixed #)
Total: 1667 visits, 4195 pages
I'm a weekly, so I'm pretty happy about this. Especially since I have another full month to compare it to.
For August, I had
Daily average: 42 visits, 84 pages
Total: 1307 visits, 2627 pages
So there's definetely been a readership growth. And the weekly totals at the end of the month are better than the totals at the beginning. At the beginning of September I set a goal of a 50 reader daily average, and maybe getting about 400 readers a week - which would be my total readership.
At the end of September, I almost hit 500 readers. This week I may be on track to break 600. Again, this is a weekly so I add up my seven-days total to get an approximation of my readership. Plus, I don't put my graphic in a place where it would affect my visits or hits, so they're fairly accurate.
It hasn't hurt that I've gotten some very kind links from a couple of Keenspotters - Clan of the Cats and Wandering Ones.
And I haven't really been promoting Odd Jobs a lot yet. I just put Odd Jobs in the Keenspace pull down, and signed up for the new Keenspace newsbox. I'm creating a poster that I'll see if I can hang up at a couple of comic shops in Chicago. I also plan on taking out some classifieds in a few school newspapers and a couple of the alternative ones too. I'll do this through the winter. And then I plan on getting a table in Artist's Alley at Wizard's World next year.
As long as each month you show some improvement, don't worry about the actual totals.
------------------

>>I also plan on taking out some classifieds in a few school newspapers
Tim, do you know if that works?
Has anybody else tried it? What were your
results with print advertising?
Here's my story:
In March of this year, a local newspaper
(The Daily Herald - it's a newspaper aimed
at the Chicago suburbs) ran an article on
web comics, and did a couple of paragraphs on
mine, and ran 2 strips. They included my
url. My estimate for increased readership
for the day and next few days after the
article ran: 0.
Now, it was a dowdy paper, not a student
newspaper. On the other hand, the circulation
is larger than a student paper. Plus, it
was much better exposure than a classified
ad - they even ran the strips in blue.
Also, the url was the long, dumb version of
my old site (geocities/southbeach/pier/4856
or something).
Still, all you had to remember was 'BoxJam'
or even 'doodle' and I'm at the top of
any search engine search.
So it didn't work for me.
Also, I don't remember any time when I've
seen a url in print, and then later typed
it in to my browser.
I'd like to hear other stories, though.
------------------
Here comes BoxJam's Doodle!

y'know, Entertainment Weekly magazine (*bows at the mention of the name*) has an Internet section now, and I'm THIS CLOSE to writing them and asking them to take a look at the webcomic industry. Now THAT'S exposure.
------------------
