Because I'm bored, AND a goldbricker with an entire lab of computers to watch over until the wee hours of morning, I decided to take up the gauntlet thrown down in another thread and write up some lists for the oh-so-manly men of Fans! Enjoy, if you can. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/smile.g ... ill:
Ten Reasons Why Will Rocks My World
10. He's the strong silent type. (While Will doesn't have any problem with speaking up when it's really needed, he tends to be best at glowering silently. Even so, when he does open his mouth, it's usually to say something brilliant. Oh, and do I ever need to explain the strong part? What more could you ask for?)
9. He looks good no matter WHO he is at any one moment. (Be it thick-lipped vampire, Badgerman, Clingon, dreadlocked beatnik, or Hyperman himself, Will is always styling.)
8. He carries a machete. (The alure of danger... Oolala!)
7. He swears in the name of Infi! Another David Brin lover! (Okay, okay, this is speculation, but in any case, swearing by Infi (Infinity) is cool.)
6. For all his toughness, he's easily shocked, provoked, or ticked off. (Tim manages to get a rise out of him every time, over next to NOTHING. It's kinda endearing.)
5. He's almost as good at dramatic speeches as Rikk. ("Ringed around Mount Rushmore right now are bruisers in taffeta-speckled uniforms who think they run America. And if we just stand here, we prove them right!")
4. He punched Rikk's lights out. (Sorry... I used to date a Rikk... I'm not bitter, really....)
3. He's oh-so mysterious. (If I'm not mistaken, we know less about Will's past than just about anyone else, aside from Gunth and maybe Tim. He's got some unexplained beef with the military, a jailed father who apparently was a woman-beater (Did his dad abuse his mom? Maybe even a sister? We never get to see WHO Will spends his time avoiding on Visitiation Day.) And, of course, his uncanny abilities for disguise and subtrafuge...)
2. He's on the rebound. (Gimme a call, Will.. I'll argue with you anytime. )
1. He's trying his best to be a decent, even GOOD human being in a world that he obviously knows is evil. (As evidenced through his attempts to be like Hyperman, Will seems to be struggling with his own humanity. He wants to be that perfect balance between tough and fair, but his temper so often gets the better of him. His strong need for the good, true and pure sometimes causes him to be repelled by the less 'refined' urges that some of his teammates exhibit, which pushes him away from those he cares about most. He has regrets, it's obvious, but he stays steadfast in his dedication to what he believes is just. I amire that.)

And there you have it.
-Wish

It's Rainin' Men!
Next in line: Tim
Top Ten Reasons Why Tim is a Hot, Hairy, Pulse-Throbbing, Faint-Inducing, Love Machine Stud Muffin (I can't believe I'm writing this.)
10. He's confident. (Say what you like about his taste, his speech, even his lack of deoderant, but Tim is a guy who seems to never doubt himself. That's pretty attractive.)
9. He's a fixer-uper. (Some girls like the challenge. Best of luck to them...)
8. As far as boyfriend potential goes, he's useful. (Want some dirt on your mean boss so you can get him fired? Tim knows where they keep the pictures and the leger books. Problem with a traffic ticket? Just bat yer eyes at the Amazing Mr. Mitts, and your record will be wiped clean. That's what I call a good value.)
7. He wears boxers, not briefs. (As much as I love Hyperman, those tighty-whities do NOT add any points to his total score. I'll take a guy in boxers any day.)
6. He's funny. (And if you actually like dirty jokes, he's HILLARIOUS. Thumbs up!)
5. He can be protective. (The outfielder's slide to catch Rumi when she fell during LtA, and of course, the big giveaway line, 'No one harrasses Rumy but ME!!')
4. He can be sensitive... Err... in his own.. unique way. ('Heyyy, we're too young ta say that! You'll have other embarrasments!" And you know what? He was right!!)
3. He's artistic. ("An' now I present an interpretive dance of 'Battlefield Earth.")
2. He's bold. (Nothing makes a girl feels special like being flirted with... only in Tim's case, it's more like a mugging than a seduction. Still, rather than worshiping from afar, Tim leaps in feet first, no matter the lady. It doesn't always work, but you never know...)
1. He writes the best Top Ten lists of all. (Sexiest Gay Cartoon Characters anyone? )

Bonus! For you guys who remain unconvinced, just remember who's fantasy brought you the image of all the Fans! women in bikinis! (sans Alisin). Isn't that reason enough to like him?
It's happened again! I've wasted everyone's time with yet another top ten list... Where will it end??
-Wish
Fearing for her sanity as the list above starts to make more and more sense.........

[This message has been edited by wish (edited 02-24-2001).]

But hey, I'm a roleplayer and comic fan and Star Trek fan as well.. do I get to be as cool as Tom? Maybe for just a little while?
Tom... wow... one awesome guy writing a top ten about another awesome guy! It's a win-win situation!
And now to the point... YET ANOTHER FARKIN' LIST! A list so silly and frivilous that you should probably skip it completely.
Heeeeeeeeeeeeere's Gunth! (And Thack)
Top Five Reasons Why Gunth and Thack Should Fight To The Death
5. Gunth is geek, Thack is anti-geek. The colision of the two will tear a rip in the existance of reality, causing the entire universe to sponaniously self-destruct. Cooooooool.
4. Thack actually stole all his ideas from Gunth, and in the deathmatch was required during the out-of-court patent infringment settlement.
3. Gunth is better and Thack's jealous.
2. The WWF-style pagentry would be the perfect excuse for Gunth to dabble in the costume fetish he's been hiding all these years.
1. Thack seeks to defeat Gunth in order to impress his one true love, the beautious Shanna Cochran.
Mwhahahahaha!!!
-Wish

Just one more list before I stagger home from the lab:
Rikk's turn!!
Top Ten Reasons Why Rikk Gets to Live
10. Although it pains me to admit it, he IS kind of cute... in a thin, scrawny kind of way.
9. He has good t-shirts.
8. He's not afraid to let his childish (err.. I meant childLIKE) side show. ("I pity you." "I pity you." "I pitied you first.")
7. He got shot! (Thanks for the wish fufilment, T! ^_^)
6. He cares deeply about his friends. (Natch).
5. He can admit that he has doubts about his faith. (This is SO hard to do... at least, it's been hard for me to do. Growing up in a certain enviroment leads to lots of expectations from everyone who knows you, and it's hard to say that you have doubts.. It feels like you're lettting the people who raised you down. It's nice to know that there are others who struggle.)
4. He's... mysterious? Maybe? (Even though I said that Will is one of the most mysterious characters thus far, I didn't even think to count Rikk.. I feel like I know Rikk's life story already, even though we havn't actually been TOLD much. Maybe I know a whole lot less about him than I think. I'll leave this space open in case Rikk turns out to have the kind of past I believe he might.... er.. have.. a past that is.. Poor grammar is causing... eyes to ... cross.....)
3. He wants the best for people, even at his own expense. (This ticks me off sometimes, but usually it's a pretty good thing.)
2. He does great stump speeches. (I trust I don't have to elaborate?)
1. Out of the goodness of his soul and the generosity of his heart, he's going to give Kath back her position as head of the club! (Right? Right? C'mon T... I'm dying up here.... )
Hey look!! You've wasted another five minutes reading my silly lists! I'm going home now to sleep the sleep of the just. Or, more acurately, the just exhausted.
-Wish

Wish, you are really doing your share to make this message board a more interesting place. I'll probably put some of these lists onto the site shortly, so people can see 'em even after they cycle off the message boards...
There are puh-LENTY of surprises coming up next week, including a few that may affect the lists...
(And as for Rikk ceding leadership to Katherine, not exactly, but we've got a couple of summer stories perking that you'll probably appreciate...)
I know I'm going to get smacked for this, but someone just HAS to mention the single coolest male character in the Faans universe.
That's right, here we have:
The Top 10 Reasons that Tom the Fanboy is the coolest Fans Related Character
10. He's a roleplayer AND a comics fan AND a Star Wars fan. It's nice to see someone interested in a broad area of fandom, and isn't easy to pin down as a costume guy, sex-crazed ugly fan, or trekkie.
9. Tom the Fanboy is three dimensional.
8. In a world of waif-thin supermodels, he's confessed an attraction to "chubb fan girls". I know Will shares this, but the objects of Rikk and Tim's obsessions are both very skinny. It's nice to see the amazing fanboy end up with the healthy, full figured woman someplace other than a Spider Robinson novel.
7. Cross-continental romances are very sweet and cool. It's cool to have the patience to ignore your logical good sense and maintain a relationship with someone who isn't geographically convenient.
6. Tom the Fanboy never rests. If someone starts a thread at 3 in the morning, you can bet that Tom will follow up. Since New Years Day, he has 279 Keenspace posts. A handful of them actually make sense.
5. Tom's done some very funny and bizzarre Fans fan-art (this is using the word "art" in its loosest sense possible). Nobody in the Fans universe has ever tone any Tom-art.
4. Tom the Fanboy has a cool name, and the attitude to match! Identifying oneself as a "fanboy" implies a youthful exhuberence, an ability to take yourself less than 100% seriously, and playful fanaticism.
3. People with "the" in the middle of their names are cool! Think of William the Conquerer, Alexander the Great, Suliman the Magifencet, Conan the Barbarian, Ivan the Terrible, Jack the Ripper. Well, OK, forget those last two. And forget that "Fanboy" isn't as cool as "Conqueror" or "Great" or "Magnificent". In fact, forget this whole item.
2. Tom the Fanboy isn't afraid to get caught up in just and noble causes. To date, the only thing I've seen him try to do is subvert MTV's Total Request Live (http://www.geocities.com/tee-moss/PSL.html) and get everyone to wear their bathrobes all day once a month (was that you, Tom?). I'm sure he has a really noble cause planned once he solidifies his power base.
1. His slightly off-center perpective, humor, and sheer energy make reading Fans even more of a pleasure than it already was. For the time and energy you've spent on this board, cataloging our Top 10 lists and other silliness on your web-page, and just for being you, I thank you on behalf of all of the Fans fans.
[This message has been edited by Czhorat (edited 02-24-2001).]

Hmmmm....after much debate in my head I've decided to post the following.
Top Ten Reason T is the Coolest Web Comic Guy Around!
10-He's a guy so he doesn't have to compete with Maritza Campos. (I'd have said person but I didn't want to cause a ruckuss).
9-He doesn't weasel out and stick his fans with "sick day comics" like Pete Abrams.
8- He'd go to a convention just for the convention! Even if he wasn't participating in the staffing/guest part. He even did so in his own comic! (see The Fandom Menace)
7- He's got HArlan Ellison kicking but in his comic!
6-Fans service. Panty shots and dominatrixes weaved seamlessly into the storyline without dominating it. (such as Exploitation Now)
5-He'll give you a free comic book if you write and enthusiastic enough letter. (that's how I got issue 5 of Fans, I've been a Fan since the crossover after all. My copy has the order form cut out of the back)
4-He writes from the heart about things we can all relate to.
3-He manages to write for TWO fabulous comics, manages to keep up with the web board for each, and isn't discouraged by harsh and unrelenting criticism. (Probably due to moral support of his legions back here)
*takes a moment to pat himself on the back*
2-He actually communicates very openly with his fans! To the point of sharing brainwaves with us from time to time! (see Satellite of Fans!)
1-He manages to get all the credit for a comic that takes a whole team of people to build. Poor Greg, T gets the credit and the "flavor of the month" artist gets all the attantion! (I really apreciate their work I just thought I'd try and be cute )
Heh heh, I half expect someone to rattle off top tens for the three artists now or start a debate thread. Heh heh, poor Greg. No love for the editor man. Hey Godai, if you get that shipment of Fenbots (like Fembots for fanboys) send one Greg's way to make up for our lack of respect.
Mmmmm.....Fenbots.......
------------------

Thanks for remembering I exist, guys.
I too am a David Brin fan. By Ifni, he rocks! He was at a con in Chattanooga this January, but I had a prior commitment and coudn't attend.
If the Fans seem familiar, it's because they were all originally composites of people we know, though they've grown and developed considerably since then.
Oh, and Suleiman the Magnificent is highly overrated. His campaign against Hungary was horribly bloody even by medieval standards, his campaign against Vienna was thoroughly botched, and he had his most competent son murdered so he could put Selim the Sot on the throne. Suleiman was a great big loser, if you ask me. Of course, as a fan of "Byzantine Chic," I'm a little biased against Ottomans in general. But Suleiman still sucks!
------------------
