Hey, everyone. I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in a banner exchange for Keenspace members? I have all the necessary code, etc., and so I am wondering if "The Keenspace Banner Exchange" would be a good idea?
------------------

Yes, that would be a good idea. If Keenspace cadets work together, Common Grounds and Schlock Mercanary, ETC. could get more hits, and share some with the rest.

Absolutely. The dropdown box is fine, but banners are a bit more eye-catching, and would lead to more "impulse buys".
------------------

I'm already participating in the Funny Papers button exchange, and thought I'd share some statistics with you:
1) Other comics' buttons have appeared on my site 2,917 times. They have been clicked on by Schlock fans exactly 7 times.
2) My button has appeared on other comics' sites exactly 3,417 times (that's 2,917+500 signing-bonus displays). It has been clicked on exactly 8 times.
3) Click-through, or "walk-in" ratio: about .002%, or one hit in 500.
This tells me that a button or banner exchange will drive traffic to your site, but only very slowly. In order to bring your site's walk-in traffic up to 1,000 hits per day, your banner would need to be displayed about 500,000 times, and in a "fair" banner or button exchange, that means your pages with buttons or banners on them have to get loaded a LOT.
I am willing to host buttons, but I don't think they will drive much traffic to KeenSpace. They will, to a VERY limited extent, "share the wealth" enjoyed by some KSpace strips with others. What we really need is {aims plasma cannon at dead horse} promotional tools at www.keenspace.com, like a spotlight, a hot-list (active comics), and a "build your own funny page" engine (like they have at www.thefunnypapers.com ). {"Horse-ash, anyone?"}
------------------

Hate to be a party pooper, but *I think*
our agreements say we're not allowed to
run other banners on our pages, competing
with the paid ones they run.
If you want to do an exchange, the graphic
has to be smaller than a banner, I think.
Check it out with the powers that be.
your resident black cloud,

Boxjam (and anyone else, for that matter),
I had the same concern, and carefully reviewed the terms of agreement found at www.keenspace.com/form.html . The agreement says "CARTOONIST agrees to place KEENSPACE'S ad banners and promotional materials on CARTOONIST'S website in the proper locations" but says nothing about what the CARTOONIST will NOT put on pages.
I always give the advert-banners top consideration. They go along the top of my page, and in 800x600 resolution the only thing a visitor sees is the advert and my comic. All of my button and link exchange stuff goes at the BOTTOM of the page, where an explorative surfer will be easily able to find it.
I feel that this arrangement is good for KeenSpace. The ads always get displayed, generating income for my generous host, and yet there is still link-exchanging going on to boost traffic (also good for my ad-income-dependent, and-did-I-mention-generous host).
Obviously, if KEENSPACE wants to revise their terms of agreement, they can do that, and I will cheerfully comply with any restrictions they want to place on me (as long as the restrictions don't include "stop this schlock thing RIGHT NOW. It's stupid.")

------------------

I seem to recall what BoxJam is saying that KeenSpace asked us not to have other banners on our pages. Maybe it was in an email or maybe they've actually revised the agreement page?
------------------

Okay, well I'm going to go ahead with the idea. Here are the details: The banners are completely random giving everyone an equal chance. They use a Javascript file which will be placed on my site, and it only takes one line of code added to your page. The banner should be somewhere one the page the URL of which you have provided. Currently only for Keenspace members. You may have up to two banners, each must have the dimensions 468x60.

<A HREF="mailto:mobius5@juno.com"*E-MAIL ME* the following information: Your Site Name, Your site's URL, Your banner URL(s), Your e-mail address.
This should all be set up sometime today after a few people have submitted their baners, at which time you will get the necessary code.
BTW, this code I used came from http://javascript.internet.com/ and it can display any HTML randomly. What other community uses could this have? I know someone else is already doing a News Box. Perhaps a random comic from those who sign up? Maybe someone could set up a page for such a thing using this code. Any other ideas?

------------------
