No no no... quit reading this message and turn your computer off and GET THAT BOOK. Even if you don't like C&H (and if you don't, you're a heathen), it's a great book for cartoonists to read. Lots of behind-the-scenes stuff and been-there-done-that, plus classic C&H strips and a ton of good commentary from Watterson himself.
------------------

One thing you'll learn from the book is how good we web-cartoonists have it.
No censorship, no size restrictions, no abitrary panel restrictions, no licensing hassles, no money.
Okay, that last one's not so hot.
------------------

I've got every Far Side book ever made. Even the one that's cleverly disguised as a children's book.

Yeah, I've seen that one. Been out for awhile though, hasn't it? Haven't got it yet though, but I've got some other C&H books. Good stuff!
Morten

Far Side's another topic dude.
I've got most the C&H books myself (including a copy of the 10th anniversary that belongs to my sister ); it and Mark Stanley's FreeFall are what got me onto the idea of doing my own comic.
My favourite strip would have to be the "eggplant casserole" one. Another book you guys should check out is Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. It's not really a behind the scenes affair, it's more of an existential look at exactly how comics work and what makes them an effective communicative tool.
And it's presented in comic format! Bonus! This is definitely required reading; don't miss it.

I'm reading Scott McCloud's "Reinventing Comics" right now. It's very well-thought-out and a good companion to the first book.

I just finished Reinventing Comics; good stuff it is. You can spend as much time on a page as you could in an ordinary book, and still find stuff to give context and such. It's very detailed while staying really clean.
--Michael

I'm reading understanding comics right now - is the Reinventing one worth getting?

It's very different. UC is mostly about the form; it's a description of the media, what it can do, and how it does it.
RC is about how it seemed to be getting a chance to do it in the late 80's and early 90's, and blew it. He outlines 12 areas where comics (in his opinion, and he does a good job as usual of separating his opinions from historical reporting) need to grow. Things like Comics as Art/Literature, Minority Representation, Creative control, successful business venues, etc. He devotes a large section to digital production and delivery (coming down pretty heavily on the side of micropayment systems as the eventual solution). It's less academic and more political, but it's a very interesting read. Keenspace-like communities are not discussed in much detail, but it gives a lot of background on where it fits into The Grand Picture.
It's definitely worth reading, but if your local library has a copy, you might not consider it worth buying.
[Editing message to add a followup]
Scott McCloud has a column where he expands on his ideas at The Comic Reader. The page explaining this (and with archives of past columns) is at: http://www.scottmccloud.com/comics/icst/icst.html
--Michael
[This message has been edited by Michael Martin (edited 08-20-2000).]

If you only want to read one of the 2 McCloud books, I thought the first (Understanding Comics) was better. It was more unified as well; as he admits up front in Reinventing Comics, RC is more of a grab-bag of topics. (And it felt like RC had more extraneous or omitable material, e.g. the several pages on the history of computers -- kind of interesting, but many of us have probably read about that before elsewhere, and it's not really very important to a discussion of comics and webcomics, IMHO.)
But I thought they were both well worth reading.

------------------

The only problem with that book is that Watterson planned to take up the ink pen someday in the future...well..that hasn't happened yet.
I know Gary Larson had the same aspirations to do something new.
Apparently, once you've run the most popular comics in the newspaper and want to return to cartooning, they don't WANT you to do something new. They want you to continue your old stuff so they can hook in more readers. As I say all the time, it's quite sad.
-----------

The Calvin & Hobbes 10th anniversary book is definately a great read. I got it last Christmas from my (ex-)girlfriend. It's a great inspirational/motivational tool. It's got some of the funniest C&H strips ever. Highly recommended stuff.
------------------
