Like I just posted in another thread, I'm currently at Rock Werchter, a Belgian rock festival that had a truly amazing lineup this year. Unfortunqtely 16 horsepower cancelled, but there are still plenty of aazing bands left, including Lais (see a recent rocr spotlight to which I'm not gonna link, since typing is hard enough as it is on this keyboard), which I saw live for the first time yesterday evening, and I just can't tell you how much of an impression they made on me, although the fact that I nearly cried afterwards and I wanted to go home since the festival couldn't have anything more to offer after that, should give you some idea.
Athough I didn't leave, I am stil considering to go to all their concerts in Netherland, but yesterday I was considering becoming a groupie and travelling after them though the rest of the world as well, so I'm already doing better now.
I don't know what it is, normally I'm not really the fan type. I guess they're just really good. They were also the only band to get absolutely everybody in the audience dancing, which you wouldn't normally expect from a multi-vocal women's folk choir. Manu Chao also managed to get thousands of peope dancing by the way, but for example the Black Crowes sucked in comparison.
By the way, Reinder, if you need another band for a spotlight, may I recommend 'Die anarchistische abendunterhaltung'? Despite what their name suggests, it's a Belgian band, but other than that, their name fits perfectly. They make dubbed pop rock based on arabian tonal scales using cello, violin, clarinet and accordeon, and it sounds like heavy ,etal occasionally, although they also do jazz, or suddenly switch to hiphop or even country. I'd swear there's an electric guitar in there if I hadn't seen for myself there isn't.
------------------

I kind of like DAA, but not that much.
My next band spotlight will be an unusual one: Finntroll, Finnish Metalists with some fascinating ethnic influences and a great sense for fashion and interior decoration. Awake98 knows what I'm talking about
------------------

Wokkel is the name of one of the presenters of a heavy metal show on local radio here in Groningen. This show is a hoot because the presenters criticise each other's musical choices and drink a lot while presenting the show. Last week, they ran an hour late, and Wokkel was allegedly on the studio floor, unable to say much more than "fuck!" Not that they would be any good at presenting a radio show if they were sober.
They play a wide range of metal music, some of it bad, some of it interchangeable, and some of it really very good. I listen every week unless I forgot
------------------

Just checked Finntroll's site, and I must admit it's pretty good music, though too aggressive for me to run out and buy the album. Sounds like you might like stuff like 'Kings of the Nordic Twilight' by Luca Turilli, and I hope you already know Skyclad.
Interesting detail: I followed some links from Finntroll's site, and got to www.boerderij.org, a small stage in Netherland where they'll apparently be playing, and I saw that Skyclad had just played there last may, whereas I just heard that they'd broken up a while ago.
Still, there's plenty of Skyclad for me to catch up with, since all I have is 6 years old.
Skyclad also sounds very aggressive, but they have every reason to, so it's okay.
Has anyone here noticed most of us have similar musical tastes? Maybe we should put up a forum where we can exchange obscure bands and albums.
------------------

As for all of us having similar tastes, it does look that way so far. But then I haven't told you about my 80s pop skeleton in the closet...
However, I may have to take a leave of absense from the message board, and even put the strip on hold for a few days after the current story ends. I just got another call from Hello You, telling me I definitely, really got the gig, all I need to do is sign the contract, and would I send them the next episode before the middle of next week? Just as one or two other deadlines are coming up as well.
I'm gonna try to keep the strip going, but needs must...
In the meantime, go to www.gjallarhorn.com , jump out of that awful frameset and enjoy the videos...
------------------

I won't have to interrupt the strip after all. But you'll hear a lot less from me through the board.
I dread to think I've made someone entertain the idea of installing a new Real Player on their machine. Uh, I watched the videos on my parents' computer.
------------------

I don't really blame you for not knowing about Luca Turilli, but Skyclad has been around for a while, now. It was the first metal band I ever heard of to include violins and harps in their music. The biggest downpoint is their death grunt, but they don't use it all the time. Their songs tend to have a good jig, and the lyrics are often about polution, kapitalism, hypocrisy, and how much they despise people who aren't environmentally friendly pagans like they are.
Ofcourse I don't know if all of this is also true for their more recent albums (less than 7 years old). The only albums I have are "Wayward sons of Mother Earth" and "A burnt offering for the bone idol".
Luca Turilli is the guitarist of Rhapsody, and he calls the music of his solo project 'epic fantasy metal'. It's very bombastic, and I'm not very fond of the male singer. On the other hand, the epic fantasy/fairy tale atmosphere is terrific, and it has some great songs. How many metal songs you know have only a harpsichord, violin and classical soprano?
You have heard of Clannad, have you? Cause I'm gonna kick ou if you haven't.
And you should have heard of Dutch bands like The Gathering and Within Temptation as well.
