Blackmore left in 1974 (replaced by Tommy Bolin), returned for the reunion in 1984, left again in 1993 when he was first replaced by Joe Satriani who finished the ongoing tour, then by the amazing Steve Morse who is still with them.
If you like Dio, get a load of the album they put out of the orchestral gig in 1999, which in turn gave them the idea of doing a full orchestral tour. RJD sang on the 1999 event and they liked him so much they brought him with them. During the tour, Dio sang on two Butterfly Ball tracks and had his own mini-set backed by the four DP instrumentalists. This was easily one of the coolest things I ever saw even though the guys played it very minimally. I hope this shows up on CD at some time.
The Highway Star is a great site from which to catch up.
------------------

Very nice art, Reinder!
But tell me: what is the fascination with Deep Purple? Everytime I hear the name I think, "Nah Nah Nah, nah-nah, Nah Nah... Smoooooke on the Water"
^_____^
But seriously, I think it's very cool to be able to do something like that for something that you love so much. It's inspirational.
[This message has been edited by Dedos (edited 06-23-2001).]

Lucky you! You have 33 years of their albums to catch up on. For starters, I'd recommend:
"Deep Purple" (1969) -their third album; not, as you may expect, their first, which was called "Shades of Deep Purple". Sophisticated, progressive late 60s pop with a hardening edge.
"Concerto for Group and Orchestra" (1969). Over the top? Oh yes. But the tunes are fun.
"Fireball". Driving, experimental hard rock.
"Machine Head"(1972). Smoke on the Water is on this one. So is most of the material for their later live sets.
"Made in Japan"(1972). It's live. Very much so.
"Perfect Strangers". Reunion album from 1984, sounding strangely like they've been evolving steadily as a group instead of having been on an 8-year hiatus.
"Purpendicular" (1996). Out goes the funny man with the stovepipe hat, in comes a smiling American guitarist with some novel ideas.
"Live at the Olympia 1996". Deep Purple concerts are what makes them special. This live set comes closest to capturing the magic.
The last time I saw them in concert, they'd been doing something special. With the help of a Romanian orchestra, they resurrected the Concerto from 1969, and invited some pals in to heighten the occasion. "We'll start very quiet, and leave you... deaf," as the keyboard player, Jon Lord, announced. Which they did, and at the end of the gig they'd left me, at less than half Jon Lord's age, completely exhausted as well. Individually and collectively, they kick so much ass that it's a miracle anyone had any left.
------------------

I really like the classic Deep Purple stuff like 'Smoke on the Water' and 'Child in Time', but I have to admit I'm way behind on everything else.

quote:
Originally posted by reinder:
