Sorry if I came across as a bit crabby. I get that way sometimes.
I wish I knew how many people actually used the main list for finding comics. I do actually think that some more sorting of that big list would be useful... but the problem is that someone would have to do it.
As for the non-updated comics taxing the server, well, all of Keenspace accounts for less than a quarter of Keen's total bandwidth, and most of that comes from a few relatively big Keenspace sites (I wonder if mine is among those ). I think it's safe to say the dead sites aren't a big problem.
Dead comics do get looked at by the updater every day but my understanding is that the updater is smart enough not to waste a lot of time on them.
------------------

I agree with Reinder here, I would expect that most people find Keenspace comics through links on sites they visit (this including through the dropdowns, or the newsbox). It would take extreme luck to a find comic you liked through the big list even if it had just included active comics.
Honestly I don't care what they do with the list because I doubt there's anyway to make it as useful as browsing through the link pages at my favorite comics.
------------------

I'm sure this has been suggested many times, but I have an idea how this could be done.
Perhaps one of the esteemed moderators could survey keenspace comics (letter by letter, or some other systematic method), and identify dead comics or comics that never started posting. Next they could email the creator to ask their intentions. If the creator has quit creating or doesn't respond, then the comic is taken out of the system.
Another suggestion is that the keenspace list have a page for each letter as the whole a to z list sometimes takes a long time to load. This discourages people from surfing from comic to comic.
Or another idea is to have Keenspace categories such as anime, scifi, adult, comedy, sports, etc.
I would love to see the Keenspace improve. It is great to have an opportunity to post my comic and I would like to make it easier for people to find while surfing Keenspace.

And again, I would like to ask in what way you expect Keenspace would benefit from this. So far, I haven't heard any convincing answer to this question from anyone proposing that old strips be removed.
------------------

Must be an oft asked question. Sorry to bother you.
The benefit to keenspace would be the ability of surfers to get to posting comics easier.
But I see your point. An ad on any page is revenue. The more the better.
I assume this means that all these comics are not taxing the server.

For one single person to go through all the comics and make a manual listing would take about two years adding. I calculated this from the fact that I was only able to get through about 30 comics a day, considering I was counting all the comics. (And when you hit a comic with more than 10 comics it takes a VERY long time to count.)
An automated script with all the keenspace links could do it faster, but ... gee that's what the Keenspace list page does.
