Sunday weekly readers. I get them too but not as much.

quote:
Originally posted by Ben:

Nope, can't be it. I got 400-something pageviews the day before and 300-something the day before that.
------------------

I still don't get this even after repeated Screwball explanations -
How do you get a visit and not a page view? By definition don't you get credit for at least one page view for every visit?
And how does the news box impact that?

------------------

Simple. Visits are derived from hits. I can't think of the words to explain this, but pageviews are counted when someone grabs and HTML file from your site, which are almost an accurate measure of your readers.
The newsbox affects visits because it counts as a hit when something grabs any file from your account. Since the newsbox uses images from your account, every time your image is shown, it counts as a hit, and ultimately, a visit.
I didn't even realize that until after I had made the newsbox. I'm going to have to make some changes before it becomes an official tag, (it will, it will!) like keeping all the files away on a different server, as to not screw around with your hits. (My daily hit average 2258 according to the webalyzer stats. This because whenever someone grabs the newsbox code off of a site, it counts as a hit.) I also have to remove some comics from the box which have been Spotted.
------------------

Although, Chris did an excellent job explaining it, but... No, I think that's it. Good job, Chris. Non-HTML files off site tend to screw up visits. burntdog, ever notice how many referrers come from your list?

quote:
Originally posted by burntdog:

It sounds like you thought the "411" was a typo when compared to the "11" from the next day... it wasn't. What I'm more intruiged about it how the heck my pageviews went from four-hundred and freakin-eleven, nearly my highest amount, to just... 11... (which turned out to be 30 or just 40 by the end of the day).
------------------

Maybe we could do what Big Panda does and have everyone put their image and text in a subfolder on the site called "NewsBox" - than the Newsbox could pull it from everybody's site and we'd have more flexibility to update our images/text?
------------------

I COULD do that now, but only for the images. I have no idea how to grab text from a file and display it so. Using javascript, anyway.
------------------

I think part of the issue is that every time a page shows your newsbox, your page registers a hit. However, nobody has actually visited your page, and may not have even seen/paid attention to the newsbox.
It sort of skews the stats.

I'd think the easiest way to make the newsbox "honest" in terms of hits is to make a "newsbox.keenspace.com" url, and have all the crap put there. On that same note, if the owners of the newboxes had access to the folders, they could change the pics and text of the box. Of course, they could change the text of other people's stuff too unless you had security all over the place... Heh-heh.
I'd actually thought about whining about the screwy stats (I noticed the referring URL list was a bit long) but I figure it's a small sacrifice considering how much I like the box.
------------------

Another big stat-skewer is banners on Top 100 lists. If you are hosting your banner off your keenspace site, then every time that Top 100 list loads, your site will register a hit, and a visit, but not a page.
We went over this about a month ago. The solution (as stated above) is to host your banner ads and other publicity graphics someplace other than your keenspace directory. That's what I do.
------------------

Ok, I'm still trying to completely understand this whole screwy Webalizer thing. Now I'm sure you people have been over this a hundred times, so if there is a simple explanation of this stat thing somewhere, please just point me to it. I don't to make anyone repeat themselves, but if you really want to, by all means, post another explanation. I also use a counter from thecounter.com for my site, and I'm just trying to see if both sets of stats synch up.
------------------
