We do eat horses. You've never heard of Jello?Honor wrote:Which brings me neatly to why it's against my personal code to eat dogs, cats, and horses...
It's not that they're cute... It's social contract. It's pack honour, so to speak.

Pedophile=someone who violates "safe-sane-consensual" - in that, a child can not consent to a sex act. Of course, different cultures have a different definition of "child" (13, 16, 18, 21 - I suppose, within the culture of American Car Insurance Adjusters, you're not really an adult until age 24, because before then, they really jack up your rates).
On most of the other issues, I'm pretty much in agreement with Honor.
Some other deep questions:
If you agree with the death penalty - why? (Morality=killers must be killed (WTF?), Pragmatism=society must be protected from killers, only way to guarantee it is to kill them - either for deterrence value, or for fear of escape/appeal/parole, etc.)
If you agree or disagree, is there an execution method with a degree of cruelty that would change your mind (ranging from say, drawing and quartering, on the cruel end, to lethal injection, on the humane end - though helium asphyxiation is probably the easiest way to go)?
If you disagree with the death penalty because you feel that there's too much capacity in the justice system for error, (erroneous conviction) - then in the converse, when someone is rightly convicted, and given a life sentence, how do you feel about the following results of our imperfect incarceration system?: (change in law, prisoner suicide, escape, early release, furlough, pardon, REGIME CHANGE: - guess how many rapists, murderers, thieves, and thugs were released from prison in Iraq when Saddam was overthrown? (answer: all of them) Ever wonder how many of those are members of militias or death squads today?)
If you agree with execution - then who deserves it? For what crimes, exactly? Even murder is not always clear cut, or easy to show, some violent deaths are really accidental, but in the end, it often comes down to reading the killer's mind. When the death penalty was re-instituted in the US, we were told it was going to be only used in extreme cases, for "drug kingpins".

Nope.fnyunj wrote:If you agree or disagree, is there an execution method with a degree of cruelty that would change your mind ?
change in law: Well, in theory at least, we change the law because something was wrong with it. So this shouldn't be a problem.fnyunj wrote:If you disagree with the death penalty because you feel that there's too much capacity in the justice system for error, (erroneous conviction) - then in the converse, when someone is rightly convicted, and given a life sentence, how do you feel about the following results of our imperfect incarceration system?:
prisoner suicide: In general I support anyone's right to die. This might be a sign that something's wrong with the prison though.
escape: Very very rare. Hardly worth thinking about. (Unless you're a prison guard, in which case you probably should.)
early release: That covers a whole lot of scenarios... some good, some not.
furlough: Interesting, I hadn't really heard of that before (but just googled it). Sounds like a good idea, mostly.
pardon: Certainly can be abused, but given how sparingly this power is normally used I'm inclined to think there's usually a good reason.
REGIME CHANGE: Uhhh, I suppose that might be worth considering if you lived on a country that was likely to get invaded and overthrown. For non-invasion regime change, see change in law.
