Why did you start your comic in the first place?

Cartooning is in my blood. I can't remember when I haven't done it. Putting it on the web makes it even better, though, cuz people actually look at what I write and draw. It's great.
And I can associate here with other cartoonists, too; my friends and family just aren't interested, so the boards are a great place to communicate with the rest of you guys who also love the medium.

I did it for the money...
...
Seriously, I started for the money. For some random topic on another site, I created a comic strip and posted it. The owner of the site asked if I would create comics for the site at a $20/month rate. This only lasted for about 2 months, and I only saw 1 months pay... but I had fun doing it.
And it was the fun that got me to start up my next comics (that and lots of time on my hands).

I've had Ded kicking around in my head and on my drawing books for some time.... then I went through a bout of unemployedness some 2 years ago and my girl friend at the time convinced me it would be a worthy venture..... now a couple years later, and having a few fans under the belt, I find it's a fun way to let the madness spread....

Two stories:
1) A news reporter telling a child that the reason helium balloons floated was that they were warmer than the air around them.
2) An article in a college newspaper talking about the "Neutron, Proton, and Electron bombs" in the worlds' arsenals and what would happen if a terrorist got ahold of one.
Science stupidity drives me up a wall. I'm all in favor of people who cannot pass a basic science test being clubbed to death by a baby seal. Since I know that will never happen, the second best thing was to write a comic that answers science questions.

For a real answer... I always seem to be looking for new creative outlets. I've always been drawing, then I started writing, had a phase I painted a lot, then I started singing and playing the guitar, songwriting, making crappy records, collages, design stuffs... then I started spending more time on the internet, stumbled upon webcomics, and making one was the only logical conclusion for me. For months I've been feeling like it's time to move on to a new creative outlet though. I guess I just like experimenting, but can never really commit to one project in the long run. *shrugs*

A mate of mine sent me a message saying 'I'm gonna start a webcomic and you're gonna draw it for me!'
I replied that I wouldn't have the time, or probably the interest, because I was teaching full time and the kids would take up all of my time and besides, it's too fun to stop teaching, etc etc, and by the way, what's a webcomic?
Half an hour later I sent him a short scribbled strip about a kid called Casper catching the bus to school on the first day. Now it's nearly 400 strips later.
My mate has since dropped out and only reads them in chunks when he comes down at holiday time.

I've been doing comics my whole life and when I saw that I there was a means of putting a comic online (and for free), I jumped up at the chance. Now people can read what I draw/write and I now have my foot in the door. Now a year and a half later, I'm glad I made that leap. Running a regular comic strip has honed my art and writing skills tremedously...something that wouldn't of happened if I didn't start a comic.

A number of factors contributed to the creation of Lightbringer. In no particular order:
1. The desire to promote my books as well as expanding the universe that the books take place in.
2. A desire to see superheroes go back to basics (secret identity, few supers running around, supporting characters)
3. Want to explore philosophical themes important to me (might for right, right for right)
4. Simply a desire to create a comic in preparation for my (hopeful) ascent into professional comic books.

Because it was more fun to doodle in Calculus than write out formulas.

Creative outlet.
When someone does something I admire or enjoy, I immediately want to steal all their talent and take their job. (I'm looking at you Humbug!!!)
Drawing is one of the few things I do that no-one I know personally is better at than me, (The only other thing I had was guitar, but all of my cousins are prodigies at that now.) so this was the avenue I chose
