As far as I'm concerned. Please give credit somewhere to Brandt Thomas Bollers, who has been afflicted with the Rog for four decades.Gengar003 wrote:So, it's a go?tellner wrote:He's not mine. He belongs to Himself.![]()

Hah. Sounds like an extension of the legend that those black cats always pick their owners. They just show up and take over the house. By the way, the crooked tail isn't broken vertibrae--it's a recessive trait carried by siamese cats. One of my siamese has it. The legend is that the original siamese cat was kept by a princess who asked him to guard her golden rings. She slipped the rings over the cat's tail, and the cat curled his tail down at the tip to hold the rings. And now siamese cats have curly tails.
Sounds like the 'Rog is part siamese. Which fits. Black coat is a recessive for them, and the curly tail, and the huge fangs, and the clawing hard surfaces (Shanachie does what looks almost like a tapdance in front of the water bowl sometimes...Juju just tries to bury the food bowl to keep the other predators in the house from finding it. Nevermind that the food bowl is on tile).
And only answering to one name...yup, that's siamese. When we rescued Juju from being hawkbait, I tried every name I could think of for that tiny black kitten. Til I got to, "Juju?" "Mrw?" "Is your name Juju?" "Mrw!" And he bounced over to me. "Guess your name is Juju." Of course, now he also answers to Black Beast ('cause he is at 15 pounds).
Hmm, 'cept for the green eyes, does the 'Rog look anything like this?

(he was pissed off that I used the flash)

The whiskers are straighter and more crinkly, but yes. Does your cat have back legs that are significantly longer than the front ones?jackalope wrote:Hmm, 'cept for the green eyes, does the 'Rog look anything like this?

Yeah, another siamese trait. Though Juju has a squeaky little voice. Until he gets pissed off. Then he growls. I can always tell when he's finally decided he's going to kick Mr.Grey's ass. As the youngest cat in the house, Juju is usually pretty submissive. Until he gets fed up and remembers that he's the biggest. However, all of them fear Seachay the ocicat. All she has to do is glare at 'em. Then again, dogs run from her.tellner wrote:jackalope wrote:The whiskers are straighter and more crinkly, but yes. You can see all the monsters on this page. Including a couple from when Juju was still a cute kitten and weighed less than 10 pounds. The devil cat still thinks that jumping on me in the middle of the night is a great game. He also likes to take a flying leap at the back of my office chair while I'm sitting in it ("gotcha!"). Good thing he loves me. And actually, he's the non-psychotic siamese. Shanachie's the one who bites me to show how much he loves me.

I am unable to comment; citing no previous cat experience, with one exception:
Cats + Me + Enclosed Space + Sufficient Time = Dead Me
(It's that whole, my throat closes up and I can't breathe thing... Note that I have not tested this hypothesis to its conclusion, and have no current plans to do so.)

I've got to question that, Toawa. I used to suffer just as you. Then my ex fiance got two cats (I should have seen this as a sign things were going down
) and eventually, I was able to not only handle it, I had the furballs napping on my chest while I read without a problem. Elapsed time for this adaption? A few weeks. Mind you, nothing was done to reduce their dander and at times symptoms of my previous allergies would show up. I have no explaination.

Allergies are funny things; my understanding is that, when put into that kind of situation, one of two things will happen:happypeepeehead wrote:I've got to question that, Toawa. 1.) You will become desensitized, as you did, or
2.) You will become hyper-sensitized, and the reactions will become worse/faster.
With my luck, it'd be the latter.

Speaking only from experience, and with absolutely no medical authority....
It might have something to do with gradually getting used to the dander.
I'm allergic to cats, and I always had problems with our outdoor cat when I was young. My family wasn't entirely sure that it was the cat I was allergic to until my mom ran over her when I was in second grade. Shortly after that, my respiratory problems cleared up.
Later on, when I was in highschool, a stray kitten kind of adopted my dad, and we ended up treating her as an indoor cat. The house started out without any dander at all, and the cat was tiny at first, but even after three years, I didn't have any problems.
Then I went off to college. When I came back for Christmas, lo and behold, I started sneezing again. I figure I must have lost my tolerance since I was living at home fulltime.

Whether or not you can become desensitized to an allergen depends on how allergic you are to start with. If you get angiodema (swelling in the face/mouth/throat), that's a life-threatening reaction and forget the idea of gradually becoming desensitized by later exposures. That's the type of reaction you carry an Epipen (epinephrine injector) around for. It's also the level that most allergist will tell you to forget even trying allergy shots. Think about it, no one in their right mind would tell someone who's allergic to bee stings that they'll get used to bee venom with further stings, but cat dander or foods...

I've never had any official medical tests, and I don't know if that is my type of allergy. If it is, it's slow-onset: it could take 10+ minutes of exposure to the air in a house with a cat before I start feeling the effects, and it gradually gets worse as I stay in, starting with coughing/wheezing and working its way to me needing more and more effort to draw air into my lungs. After I remove myself from exposure, it then takes 1-6 hours (depending on how long I was exposed) to get back to normal.
Which reminds me of a (in hindsight) really stupid thing I did once. I wanted to be at a LAN party at a friend's house, but he had cats. Knowing that allergies involve histimine, I decided to try loading up on anti-histimines. It did delay the onset to about 2 hours, but between the drowsiness (I probably shouldn't have driven home, but...) and the breathing problems... I shouldn't have done it. Plus, I think it either messed up my recovery or left me open to infection or something, cause it took me weeks to recover.

Since everyone is doing it, here is a picture of the cutest kitten in the world.
This would be my cat Morbo when he was fresh out of the box.

Gaze upon the cute and dispair.
