Kisai wrote:Dragonaur, have you 'logged out' and 'logged in' to the forums and then into the siteadmin with your username spelled and case exactly as it is in the forum?

make sure if you are logging out of the siteadmin, to hit the 'logout' link, not back, you can type in anything, or nothing, punch cancel, then click 'login'
Ah! That works EXCEPT I must log in to siteadmin with my name in capitalized like so: "Dragonaur".

I repeated the steps, to make sure: I can log in to the forum with my name "dragonaur" or "Dragonaur" which I understand works fine for all the reasons previously stated in this big thread. I did the login, logout, cancel steps on the forum, HOWEVER, to log into siteadmin, I must then use my "Dragonaur" login.

I was getting tripped up at the "cancel" button step. I haven't figured out if I must always use the forum to get at siteadmin or simply be properly logged out from siteadmin to make this all work. I'll experiment more in the following weeks. But what is clear, is that I MUST use "Dragonaur" to log into siteadmin.

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR PATIENCE in this manner. Your help made all the difference. There's definitely some issue with the forums versus siteadmin but I'll be darned if I know what it is. Cookies/SessionID/IP ???

.ps The forum shows my name as "Log out [Dragonaur]" for the log out link while I'm logged in regardless of the case of how I actually logged in to the forums. Note, the capitalized letter. Just thought I'm mention that. ^_^;

Nope. When you first finished the server work/move I couldn't log in via the normal siteadmin and so I used http://siteadmin.keenspace.com:8080/cgi-bin/web-ftp.cgi I used my old all lowercase login with my old password. That worked once. But the next week that stopped working too. It just times out and gives me a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" web page response. I figured that script went away. Is there a replacement?
Use http://siteadmin.comicgenesis.com:8080/cgi-bin/web-ftp.cgi instead. Noone should be using the .keenspace.com domain anymore. It's only there for link redirection.

Did you try Quickadmin with your comic's totally seperate username and password?

Check if autoupdate is turned on, you may need to turn on 'advanced edit' in the siteadmin for the comic data. At some point any comic that hadn't updated in 6 months had their updates turned off
I'm not sure about anybody else, but I'm still having auto-update issues. I had to update manually again this morning. Prior to that, my rss feed was showing Friday morning as my last update (also manual). My autoupdate is still turned on, but I have yet to get it working since the move. Any other suggestions?

Oh heck, I didn't even think to change to the comicgen domain! Ok I'll give that a try soon. I've been itching to make some page updates.

Yeah we kinda had been saying that for the last two weeks. Siteadmin requires logging in with the forum username case sensitive. The actual forums don't care.

If I made the forums case sensitive, there'd be all sorts of complaints since no forums do this.

The siteadmin however has no session manager, and to be honest, the way I intended to replace the session manager was supposed to use a more direct approach with apache, not php, and that is what the password hashes were setup under. The password is much less secure when the username is not case sensitive since it's sent in the clear, like the forum, but there's no way to force encryption of the password in the standard login box (at least not without some AJAX trickery)

I have just created a webcomic account, but have not been able to log in to modify it or addany new strips. Every time I try logging in with my domain username and password this message comes up:
This page requires authentication, please goto the Login page.
But it regestered my username because it had said that it was logging me in before I was redirected to that message. I've tried using my forum name and password (correct case and everything) and the method you suggest, but it kept saying that the username or password was invalid. I've tried logging in through the main page log-in but that says that my domain username is invalid. When I type in my urlof my comic, I see that it is readable, I just cannot log in to change anything. I am using the latest version of Windows Internet Explorer.

http://siteadmin.comicgenesis.com uses your forum login, the :8080 uses your ftp password. They are different. If you only get the error message from the 8080, don't use it, it's too hard to explain why it doesn't work short of 'close all browsers, empty cookies, and then try again'

Yes, I just mentioned it because I thought I saw one post mention that the logins had to match, even tho the forums were case insensitive.

Never the less, it seems I had to do the forum-login-logout-cancel trick to get into the siteadmin. I've been using the same password all these trys! Simply attempting to log straight into siteadmin doesn't seem to work. ^_^; I don't see the forum/siteadmin connection, but I'll continue to use the voodoo if its necessary to get into siteadmin!

Okay, so it seems that anyone still having trouble getting into siteadmin should:
  1. Log out of siteadmin
  2. Make 100% sure they are logged out of the forums as well
  3. Log into the forum using their proper, case-sensitive username (and password) - this will create a new password hash thingy (technical term)
  4. Login to siteadmin
That should work for everyone.

Now, anyone have any ideas on the people who can get in through siteadmin and ftp but get 'permission denied' errors when they try and change something through ftp?

NO it's not

I'm also having issues with updating. It's probably something stupid, but not only will it not auto-update, but when I tried to manually update all the archives went away (that is to say that the comics are still there, but the pages are not). Now, not only can I not update, but when I put things in the workspace/comics folder, they must be dying of boredom, because they aren't there later. Cricket and I have both uploaded things and nothing new has appeared since June 27th. (part of that would be due to his not making comics, but some of that time, he has).

When you trigger a 'full' update, it deletes the archive pages intentionally. This is by design, as a full update needs to process the archives one by one, and if the files are still there, people complain of 'holes'

The files are there, when I forced the full update none of the comics were 'there', but after it updated it (took several minutes, tch) the comics were there, and the archives, but they kept giving errors...hm

EDIT: ... maybe if the directories were +x?

point of reference guys, don't change the permissions of stuff in public_html, because autokeen and the web browser obey the permissions, turning off the execute flag for /comics or /d will effectively disable access to the directory, the files were all there.

Ok, so i triggered a regular update to make some changes to some of my extra pages, and it changed the comic to tomorrow's. The front page now has 20070809 on it, and my clock says it's 20070808.

Is this a change to the way the updates work, is my clock wrong, or is there a bug?

I don't know if it's been addressed since there is nine pages, but on this new account, I can't add a directory to the Public_html folder. I keep getting a 550 Permission Denied error...

this is what i get:

################################

Forum Username jameslong not valid!
You must have a ComicGenesis Forum login (or you entered a bad username or password, it is CASE SENSITIVE.)

Please see below for possible correct spellings:

jameslong

Logout to try again (hit cancel)

@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@

I've followed the directions like 5 times, now and made certain that my forum username is all small caps. it even shows me it's right, there. I've also erased all my cookies and the siteadmin still remembers me. Oh, and I can log into the Butch web ftp, still... I just need to trigger an update as my site has been sitting idle for the last month.

I'm using MIE7
i have no firewall software running

okay, scratch it.

Just logged in with firefox. It had to be something with the browser remembering the password/username wrong or something. I've never been to siteadmin with firefox before.
