The evolution of your comic V2

Post by Killbert-Robby »

Some of you may remember a thread a long while ago, talking about the evolution of your style. I thought we'd have a nice little recap a few months down the line. Simply, just show us a nice progression of how your style has evolved through your time comic-ing

Image

When I feel I've drawn a pile of crap, sometimes I'll remember to look back in my archives. It's just wierd to see I can draw, for example, recognisable hands now, or even the fact I have non-human characters in the cast now, like the emo-puppet. Killbert, I salute you.

Wow! You guys can show a definite progression!!

I think I'm too new. Drawing my characters isn't automatic quite yet. I have only been cartooning since August, but here are the faces of Zelda for each week (roughly) of the strip. When I was pulling these, I saw great differences within the same week!

So you guys are those people who make me go through months of bad drawing just so I could eventually get to the good part!

Yeah, Skikan. Usually artistic progression happens over months, even years.

My comic's over a year old, and I don't think I've improved enough to bother posting it in this thread.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

I've gotten better at overall page layout, in addition to getting better at drawing my characters...at least, I only hope so. I know I've changed styles a few times, and at present I'm trying to get back to my "darkdarkangsty" style of a half-year past.

Here are three of my characters:

Even though I've only been doing this since March, it does already look different, especially the eyes.

Wow... I know it's just crappy stick-figure art, but Ugly Girl has really changed over the last year and a half.

Here's the evolution of Shandy from the first time she appeared back in my old comic "Of Monkeys and Mutton" back in 2004 to here most recent appearance about a week ago. I did this with her because she's been in the comic the longest and has changed the most (she seems to look different every damn time I draw her)...anywho...

You are not allowed to use those words to refer to your comic ever again. My art hasn't changed much in the little less than a year I've been drawing.

I've been making G'nerds2000 since 2001, but the stuff i have online from that far back are mostly scattered remnants, so I'll do this by periods:

Not yet. I'm not yet happy with my visuals.
Edit: It could be I'm deluding myself, but I don't think I've stagnated. Again, yet...

Like Swikan, I haven't been doing this thing for too long. So, for better perspective, here's a chart of the evolution of my main character's design from about a week after I first started teaching myself to cartoon to about a month ago. The last image is the only one from an actual comic, and is also the only one done on my Wacom.

Image

The biggest change would have to be making Andrew's cheek bones more defined, as well as making his head shape a tad feminine. I still haven't naied his hair yet.

For a long while, I made my character's heads about 1 1/2 the size of their trunk, but lately I've been try to shrink the heads to about 2:1 of the trunk. For my adult characters, I'm aiming for 3:1, but I haven't had much practice at them and so they've been turning out a bit malformed.

Keep going Doublemint! I want to see his hair grow out to like a hippie... and the evolution of clothing is funny for some reason.
