I've been away a few days - and it seems this thread moved along pretty speedily!

Anyhoo - I jusy wanted to "defend" (for want of a better word) my previous ramble to the glorious Honour - aka, She of the Lethal Quotation Marks

As you describe it, "Our Culture" being at fault for the disrespect of women in these stereotyped videos - I was (probably not very well) trying to illustrate that) via the inclusion of the "revelation" from the horses mouth (so to speak - I'm taking your equinine thing and running with it - bear with me...) about the main reason these clips are made in such a way, because the public likes them, wants to emulate it and consistently buys them.

And as far as the whole "Ho, Whore Bitch," thing goes - whatever. In terms of these film clips (sorry folks for the referrences to pages past, mea culpa) it is an adulation of sorts of prostitution, with self styled pimps, and their stables. etc I personally find this depressing and distressing. Having done time (and believe me that's what it felt like) in such an industry, the idea of it becoming, I don't know, glorified? (can't think of a better word at the moment - it's been a l-o-n-g day, sorry) disturbs me - Without drifting into a ramble, perhaps the simplest (and trauma free

) way of kind of describing my opinion about it is by comparing it, in a way to the whole "heroin chic" thing of a couple of years back.....

Maybe it all boils down to people having stupid desires coming from the rat and lizard portions of the brain. They want to be able to have sex on demand from the best-looking mates they can get, without any strings attached.

Hmm, joining in the dead-horse assault, I'd have to say I disagree that all types of porn and tittilating stuff is instrumental in bringing about change in society's views of sex. I would say that a lot of porn and the 'bling bling' hip-hop is arch-conservative.

Victorian remnant sexual mores say: Sex is dirty, proper women shouldn't be eager to have sex.

Porn says: Sex is dirty (look at the titles on the boxes. They RELISH in the dirtiness because it makes people buy it)

Proper women shouldn't have sex for pleasure's sake(classical example: The pizza guy. The woman has sex because she can't pay for pizza, or to get out oif a speeding ticket, or she gets semi-raped by a plumber) When women ARE eager to have sex, the male co-starts tend to talk to them with open contempt.

Don't get me started on hentai games.

So, while I do believe that sex-positive porn can improve the world a lot, and should definately be more present, I disagree that ALL sexuality on media HELPS ending villifying sex. I think lots of porn outthere SUPPORTS the prudish mores, rather then fighting them. society told you sex was dirty, debasing, etc. etc.... so you go and watch porn, and HEY! It's all true!

Which is why, f I ever have children, I'll damn well make sure they don't get a hand on porn mags before I had a talk with them about things. Of course, that WILL be very early.

After some reflection, I think I might have been affected by my porn consumption, but not in the way most people think. I have always known the "This isn't real, this isn't realistic, these are set up, etc." aspects, and have always tried to divorce that from reality, so that I wouldn't start acting upon that information...

As a result, I've gone in the exact opposite direction. If I see it in porn, it is automatically filed in the "absolutely, positivily false" column. That, combined with an experience at 10ish (generally nonsexual, but lifeshaping none the less), and generally cautious, almost paranoid nature has made it difficult to know what might be possible and what might not.

(More recently, I've modified the "100% false" stance to a "99% false stance," basically saying that "It can happen, and people can like it, and people can seek it, but I'll never meet one of them, and even if I did, I'd never manage to get into that kind of relationship, and if I tried, I'd probably be sued out of existence, or launched into orbit Love Hina style..." I think anime might actually be hurting my brain; don'tcha hate it when the matriarchal/patriarchal goverment/religious types might actually be right about that stuff?).

Oh and unfortunately the only people i know that fit most of those catergories are goths(no offence but its rare i find a *true goth* attractive

This is an inoperative term, since there is nobody qualified to say what is or is not a "true goth" and I haven't been able so far to find even ten or fifteen people who can agree on all salient criteria of the subject...

I was setting aside part of my paycheck to buy at least one article of black clothing every week -way- before a lot of todays goth kids were born, I've always enjoyed the darker side of life, and I've always liked a lot of the "look", and I was both a pagan and a vampire afficianado before those were cool, too... On the other hand, I have little tolerance for whining, and less tolerance for music that sounds like cutting aluminum cans with a chainsaw. In fact, if I can't make out the words, the instruments, and the individual notes in it, I have little use for a piece of "music" at all. I've found my own way in the pagan thing, wich basically amounts to being over it... Between gothkids, whitewolf, and anne rice, vampires have been all but ruined for me... But my initial mental image of them is still mad sexy, and I'd still happily play a game with only the original seven camarilla clans in Masquerade...

So. Am I a "true goth*? I'm guessing no. But with luck, you can see my point.
