Oh gosh, that name will never be the same. I gave a fish to my teacher, and he decided he'd let the students pick a name. They came up with Potato.

"Ow Potato bit me!" "Potato's not dead yet." "Uh oh, I forgot to feed Potato!"

Since this is Tales of Yore, and doesn't say whose tales of yore (YOUR!), maybe I will share some tales. The topic?

STUPID FISH.
Not to say that fish are stupid. Potato is actually a fairly smart fish. Cranky, but smart. No, these are just dumb beyond belief.

1 - I'll start with my first dumb fish experience, which happened when I was just starting at the place. One of the customers came up to me and told me that one of our saltwater fish was stuck in the intake. So I went to check it out, and there he was, with his face up against the intake, looking very stuck. I grabbed a net and when it came near him he darted away. OK. As soon as the net was gone, he went right back and put his face against the intake. @#^&ing fish.

2 - The arowana, being about two feet long, was once a Scary Fish, but once you see something being that dumb, it's hard to be scared. He's so dumb he gets TWO entries. And if you see one of these guys, feel free to try this so long as the tank is covered. Arowanas typically live in jungle rivers, where they will leap out of the water and snap up insects. If something small, such as a mouse comes near the water, they'll snap that up too. Well, those instincts seem to take a long time to wear out of them. One day two customers were talking about this fish, and one raised a hand to point at it. The arowana instictively leapt up, banging its head on the tank cover. I thought that was great, so the next day as I passed by the tank to get his food, I waved at him. He banged his head on the cover. After about a week of this treatment, I couldn't get him to do it anymore. It was a little sad, but now he recognizes me and I hang out near the tank he comes over to give me the evil eye, especially if I wave. He is still, to this day, terrified of hands.

3 - If you haven't grasped just how dumb this arowana is (admittedly it's probably my fault), here's another one. He used to have rocks in his tank, but they had to be removed for his own safety. The arowana is a surface-feeder, so its mouth opens toward the surface. Because of this, he can't eat something right in front of him; he has to come to the side of it and swing his head at it. We fed him goldfish, so he always had to use this method to eat. Well, it might be surprising but the goldfish were smarter than him; when they went into the tank, they almost always went straight for a canyon-like space between the rocks and the glass. The arowana, being a narrow fish, had no problem sliding in. But his swinging method of catching prey brought him face to face with the rocks and left him with a bloody nose. Well, we just couldn't have that, so the rocks were removed. Then one day we thought maybe pellets would be easier, so we threw in a bunch of arowana pellets, which float at the top, just perfect for the surface eater. Our guy was rather curious at first, but then decided he'd try them and splash he jumped at one. He missed by well over an inch. Poor arowana, too stupid to catch a pellet.

Here's a picture of one. Ours no longer has those things on his chin. They got scraped off long ago and you can see the stubs. http://www.nishler.com/fish/images/fish/arowana.jpg

Next time, scary fish!
I'm bored.

That's nothing, there were customers that were more stupid than the fish. :-?

But hey, they paid good money.

"How much for the convicts?"
"Uh...free? We don't want 'em."
"No, I mean it. I'll take them all, they're my favorite fish."
"Okay...if that's what you want, sir."
Convicts SUCK, dude.
I'm bored.

I just wanted to second the fact that all the stories are true. some of them have even been downplayed. I mean, the time we all got (we were all involved, Kat just took the heat) rehersal cancelled the teacher made Kat apologize to the Moms. Well, the Moms were all very greatful to Kat because they had all needed the day off! So our teacher was even more angry. A group of us once liberated a couple of PVC poles with which to make some boffer weapons. I'm tryin to think of some more, but I can't right now
Hey ya lil' one post wonder! Congratulations on tackling the intarweb head first!

Hey Thatguy, yeah, I know I should be on more. But what can I say. School and all that makes me pretty busy. Oh, hey everyone, you shoulda seen a picture Kat drew once. It was quite possibly one of the most disurbing images I have ever seen! It was called "My Own Worse Critic". I'll have to get permission from Kat to tell you about that. Oh, and you all shoulda seen Kat steal my prom date once and go swing dancing with her. It was pretty interesting. Made a lasting impression on the other girl!
