A Gaggle of Banner Questions

Post by Thunt »

I hate asking questions when I know the answer is around here somwhere, but I just can't seem to find the exact info I so desperately need. I'm looking to put my banner up as a sig in forums like this one. But my problem is that I can't seem to turn it from an ordinary pic into a link to my site that can be clicked on. A very helpful person told me this...

(url=http://WHERE YOUR SITEIS)(img)http://WHERE YOUR IMAGE IS(/img)(/url) But you make them square brackets.

...but where am I supposed to be putting this tag? What do I do with it?

Also, (and here's the really noobish question) a number of people have very nicely offer to "switch banners" with me. I have never responded to this because... well... I don't know what this means. I mean, I can guess that it involves us switching each others banners, but then what are we meant to do with them? Are we supposed to put them somewhere?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, that's BBCode, which'll work in your sig on the forums. Just put it with the modified brackets into the sig, or if you prefer HTML, put this in:

Code: Select all

<A HREF="http://WHERE THE SITE IS"><IMG SRC="http://WHERE YOUR IMAGE IS"></A>

You'd put the banner in a link area that's either on the front page or linked off of it.

Crud! Sorry for all the repeat posting.

I'm entering the pic addy (browsed directly from my own computer) into the 'Filename' box then I'm entering the HTML code you suggested (with my own site addy in it) into the 'File Comment' box. I'm guessing that this isn't right since it didn't work.

Okay, I've figured part of it out. My pic has to be somewhere on the net rather than simply placed in my own hardrive, right? So I'm wondering where do people stick their banner pics on the internet? It seems kinda self righteous to have a banner for my own comic on my own comic's site. Is that what people are doing though?

And once again.... sorry for the repeat posting.

I use Photobucket, personally. They let you sign up for a free account. Or, if signing up for that turns you off, you can just use Imageshack; they let you upload images to their server right from the front page.

...and of course, there's always the option to use guide banners.

Go to your profile (there's a little link at the top there!). There you will find the option to change your signature. Put in the code with the banner and stuff there!
Switching links means they put a banner with a link of your comic on their links page on their site, giving you free advertisement. And, in return, you put their banner with a link to their site on your links page. Free advertisement for everyone!
You can use photobucket.com easily to upload pics to the internet: a better solution for this is using the banner guide linked to in the post before me. Basically, you need to use the Edit Banner option in your siteadmin page, and upload a banner to Keenspace. But the guide will be clearer :)

Good Luck!

Any ideas why this isn't working?

Well, first off, you picked the wrong image url from Imageshack's selection menu. The proper url for hotlinking is:

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/6799 ... er12zl.jpg

Also, the forums don't like HTML. You're better off using BBcode (although, this is kind of a personal opinion; a lot of people prefer to use HTML for linking, probably because it doesn't open a new window, like BBcode).

To wit:

***edit: just removing the border-breaking code tags now that they're no longer needed***

woo hoo!! Thanks so much!

Two questions...

1.. Will the image shack people hold onto my banner pic indefinately?

2.. For link exchanging purposes, can I simply hand someone that code and then I get a similar code from them?

Pretty much. As far as I know, they'll only remove it if it exceeds 100MB of bandwidth in an hour. Refer to their questions page.

Generally, it's customary for participants in a banner exchange to upload their respectively received banners to their own servers. In other words, no hotlinking. But you can show the code to them so they can save it to their hard drive for uploading.
