Single Panel

Discussion of the yearly awards for best comic in various categories.

Single Panel

Postby Smbc on Mon Mar 21, 2005 9:02 pm

I think I complain about this every year, but why is there no category for single panel comics?

I don't remember that argument before, but I will bring it up to the committee. I think this is a great suggestion. It's a special skill to convey all of your information in a single panel.

The catch is that, if we included it under Art, we'd also have to include it under Writing (both take skill to present in a single panel), then we'd have to balance it with long form and "strip" form categories under Art and Writing. So we're really talking about potentially adding 6 categories once we start down this road.

Since we've been trying to cut back on the number of categories, I'm not sure we want to do this now. But obviously there's nothing that stops Single Panel Comics from winning. Chopping Block has done quite well in the past.

I don't think you would. Art is art, whether you do a hundred panels or just one. There's no real need to make an exception for single panel artists. An artist working in single panel form can compete with the artist in any form. But the writing and conceptualising is a very different animal. Now, of course, we probably qualify under Short Form Comic and I'm not entirely sure there's anything wrong with that. But as single panel comics don't usually have recurring characters, we don't generally acquire the same loyalty that strip cartoon might get. One of reasons behind Chopping Blocks success was the creation of Butch, I think.

That's a good point. Perhaps an "Outstanding Comic With No Reoccuring Characters" type of award would be better than the "single panel" distinction. Of course we'd have to come up with a better name for it.

Yeah, that could be the way to go because I imagine sites like The Perry Bible Fellowship would be in the same boat.

I'm happy to let you know, that thanks to your suggestions, we've just added "Outstanding Single Panel Comic" to our list of categories for 2006! We should be able to announce the complete final list in another week or two.
