Any tips for drawing the female figure?
Any tips for drawing the female figure?
Specifically, some sort of online *free* tutorial? And, if it can happen, somewhat anime like. Because I tried to draw one of the characters for the Noir comic I'm working on... Ugh. So, any help you can give is much appreciated.

http://saveloomis.org/FigureDrawing/27.htm this page specifically, but the whole book is good for basic anatomy. It's always recommended for the more serious artists to learn the basics of anatomy first before going into anything stylized.

There are some artsts whose style is simplified enough where anatomy study isn't really all that necessary. A serious artist, I mean, is one who's going for fairly realistic where it's easier and more preferable to learn the anatomy than fake it.
Webcomics are a hobby, level of skill depends on how much effort you're willing to put into it, just like any other hobby

Yeah... Then you get a little something like this... A man with two canteloupe halves on the chest. Mmmm... Mmm... (Michelangelo didn't really see many ladies naked...)

haha I always crack up when I see that. I always point at it to my friends and say "Look at this- this is just awful. It's like a man who put snowballs on his chest and said they were boobs."Ryuko wrote:Yeah... Then you get a little something like this... A man with two canteloupe halves on the chest. Mmmm... Mmm... And yes... Michelangelo certainly didn't see naked ladies.

Well, you have to remember that at that time artists where into figguring out the "ideal" figgure. Which usualy meant lots of mucles or at least defining what was there well much like the gods of their time. You can see this with the statue of David. David was probably 12 years old or so. You can tell by looking at things like the size of his hands and other features. Michelangelo was trying to styalize him which ened up with the buck naked statue we all know. This also leads me to believe that Michelangelo was a pedophile as he draws only men and pedernasty was moderately common practice in those days. So, when mike tried to draw the ideal woman he probably followed the same suit and added alot of mucles and such. That, combined with the fact that I doubt he did see many women naked in any context turned out what you see there. Ew....

Even that considering, there were many other sculptures and paintings that depicted the female figure much more successfully. Titian's Venus of Urbino comes to mind. The ideal female figure to people from the Renaissance weren't muscular like Michelangelo's depiction- they tend to be fleshy and soft looking. I sincerely think Michelangelo just couldn't do convincing female nudes (his pieta after all is quite beautiful, and mary is quite feminine looking)chibiartstudios wrote:Well, you have to remember that at that time artists where into figguring out the "ideal" figgure. Actually, I highly suggest geting the female version of this. I have one, and it helps a great deal. Don't rely on it for head movement, though, since the neck is very static. But nevertheless, it's very useful.
