I highly recommend reading through the Jaded Workshop. (The link was given in the post above.) I fully understand what you are going through. I knew NOTHING about HTML or building a site and was looking for someone to help me as well. You don't want to get dependant on somebody else helping you. I was surprised at how easy it is to build a site (huge thanks to Phalanx). Basically, I'm telling you you can do it. Just take it one step at a time. The first thing I did was create navigation buttons. Then I loaded one of the templates off the site (giving credit where credit is due). I worked on my site a piece at a time and got something I am pretty happy with. And the timeframe was around 3 months from beginning to end. Just roll up those sleeves and get to work.

I'm a big fan of http://www.htmlgoodies.com for an html resource. If it gets too heavy for you, you may consider shelling out the cash for either Dreamweaver, Front Page, or Frontpage Express. Also, Open Office has a HTML editor in it (which is free). But then of course you have to take the time to learn how to use the software so you may as well stick with learning the coding. But, at least there are options.

I'm currently trying to get the Ocean Blue template to work (basically I need to find the FTP Tutorial again, since the browser-based one won't upload to images), but I learned most of my html skills by looking through and playing with other site's source codes.
also, if you want some very simple, really basic tutorials, try http://www.lissaexplains.com/
It's an absolutely great site that taught me a lot.
