The next couple of weeks, David will be upgrading his portable hardware. I kind of screwed up in the beginning, not having his tools fully realized. If you were going to have the ultimate handheld, what woud you want on it?------------------

voice command and dictation of email (who wants to see a guy typing). Encrypted email and cellular, built in camera (doubles as a scanner to input printed text), voice-stress analysis, FBI most-wanted database, AI bots to sift through truckloads of data on the internet. GPS, optional eyepiece to create a virtal 60" screen in front of his eyes (<A href="http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/products/av/glasstron/">Sony Glasstron</A>.) Automotive Diagnostic plug (when the car won't start).Sorry got carried away, just a few suggestions.

A PDA of my dreams would be:* 240x320 display, 24-bit color
* About 64 megs of working ram, a half-gig of Compact Flash
* Wireless connectivity, with pager/TCP-IP service.
* Phone integration.
* IR, Ethernet and standard serial connectivity
* Seperate keyboard (via serial port or Ethernet) with serial/Ethernet, paraell, mouse.
* Runs LinuxIt would be sort of a mix between a Compaq iPaq and a Handspring Visor. Note there's already Linux for the iPaq, and most everything else for the Handsprings and PalmOs systems.BTW - Great work. I'll have to peruse though the archives later.------------------

Speaking as a writer rather than a tech geek, why not leave some features unexplained, as future plot devices? It can help to get yourself out of an unforseen writing corner.BTW, I found Odd Jobs on a random wander through Keenspace, and I am INCREDIBLY impressed. This is easily one of the best strips, let alone Keenspace strips, that I have found. Odd Jobs has a place in my favorite 10.------------------

This is basically the software business model that Microsoft wants to completely change over to in the next few years.Computers-as-appliances is basically the direction that consumer computers are moving towards. There'll probably still be the high-complexity, powerful equipment, but the idea of upgrading your computer will somday be as silly as the idea of upgrading your microwave or refridgerator.When those high-power resources are needed, then it'll be by rental (or by payment for service, just like if you need a U-Haul for a tiny fraction of your driving time.------------------

Megazone! Welcome and thanks for the first post! I like your suggestions. voice command and dictation of email - good idea.Encrypted email and cellular - that we can assume.built in camera (doubles as a scanner to input printed text) - interesting. Cameras will probably be standard someday, much like microphones today.STrRedWolf had some good tech ideas too.But here's a thought:

Go Tim! I don't know how I found your site, but it's one of my top five webcomics. It's a shame you're not on Keenspot. You've got a thin, spare style that goes very well with the subject of your strip. It's hard to find a comic on the Web that doesn't even occasionally submit to a gag strip.About the PDA: What exactly is the microwave burst for? Is it related to the GPS? I'm confused. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/confused.gif"> Perhaps there should be something on it for self-defense, like a little taser or something. I like AMiB's idea of leaving all of its features open-ended, to give it a bit of mystery. It might help if he could get into police databases or something like that, for a little inside info. David is sort of a private investigator, right?

I like how the mundane can lead into the extraordinary. That and the idea of random links leading to anywhere...------------------

It proved itself when the Cole got it's now gaping hole blown out over in Yemen -- there was no power and it was the only thing that was self-contained to communicate back to HQ!!!------------------
