SpiritWolf> Wonderboy in Monsterland had this... Nice exploring feel to it. Well, okay, you could only go one way, but it felt like you were actually going somewhere.

As for RPGs, I'd love to play one one day... But nowadays I don't even have the time anymore. See, I chat too much. *l* With the people you see on this board. They take away too much of my time, darn them!

Mel> And I never picked up on that idea! That must have been a very subtle thing indeed... *l* Either that or we're all very slow.

{laughs} Well, only the levels started off to the right, you could still wander backwards within the area, it was sorta locked down and Wonderboy III had far more freedom but still ... I liked it. ;>
Now back on topic. I hope Misty beats Shadow unaided. He's been a bit arrogant lately and he could use his ego being deflated just a bit ... well, maybe even a lot. Though if that happened Misty may become pack alpha and that'd make things interesting for the wild pack -- especially if the DR pack did get released, transition would be easier then.

SpiritWolf> Oh nonononono, you're not going anywhere until we have determined your weight in relation to that of a duck.
It's quiet here. Maybe the topic got to random? *L* But I CAN honestly say now that the old games WERE better than the new ones. An uncle of mine sent me an Amiga emulator, see? "Gee, where has Arno been for the last two weeks?"

Kiva> *LOL* No! the Amiga is better! Cause... Er... I've never seen an Atari ST, actually...

SpiritWolf> HA! TURRICAN II! *L* I love that game! I could finish it with 56 lives left and having collected 555 diamonds. *L* I'd stretch the last bit of the game just to improve the record with another few hundred points. *L*
Can you make Turrican II run well under WinUAE without any hitches in the sound though? Either I'm doing something wrong or I need a better sound card. *L*
MAui> *Stares* ... Does this mean you'll appear in Dakota's Ridge as robert's mate though? A freakishly coloured cougar perhaps?

I think maybe you need a better sound card Arn and maybe more RAM too. That'd be my guess, the sound emulation takes up a hell of a lot of memory so that could be it. If you do need a new card, get a Creative Labs one. They're the best company for sound cards really full stop. I've had my AWE 64 for years now and it hasn't ever failed me in anything.
MAui in DR eh? That'd be interesting to be sure.
[ Edit ]
Actually, now that I think about it I have actually read about a WinUAE misconfiguration that can lead to choppy sound and a few other probs. So it could be that. The best way to test that is to snag Amiga in a Box, which is a preconfigured WinUAE. Now I just have to remember where it was ... ah, got it!
AIAB
[This message has been edited by SpiritWolf (edited 03-12-2001).]
SpiritWolf> Thanks a lot for the link. I haven't been in a position yet to put this through a practical test, but it's bookmarked, and I have a day off next friday, so I guess I know what I'll be doing... *L* Seeing as I have the same sound card as you, I would imagine memory might be a problem with me though. 64MB has kinds become the minimum requirements of just about anything, hasn't it? Hmmm... Would an Amiga emulator be worth the expenses? ... Turrican II... Hmmm...

MAui in DR, that WOULD be amusing, I think. *L* Problem would be though, doesn't Angie already have ENOUGH characters to worry about? Dakota's Ridge would get overpopulated.

{blinks} 64MB should be enough. Try 8MB or 12MB more and see how that works, I can't imagine you'd need more than that. My best guess now though is is that it's a bad configuration. I can understand why too, WinUAE is a real git to configure, it's like a Linux emu released on Windows, no userfriendlyness at all. ;>
[ Edit ]
Another thing you could try, if you have Direct X installed. Go into DirectX Setup; c:windowssystemdxsetup.exe I think - and then to the audio tab. Try lowering the sound hardware acceleration. I find that with the AWE cards, when it comes to later games it's best if the acceleration is low or nothing so most of the sound buffering is left to one's machine's RAM rather than the AWE's own sound buffers, when it comes to older games though it's better with the acceleration cranked up high.
That's one of the things I've learned. Also, the drivers that come with the AWE cards (on the CD or disk) are really crappy, get the AWE 64 drivers they have on the site (I can upload them for you if you can't find them), my overall game sound compatability (emulators included) went up about 40% (bringing it to almost full capacity, only two games out of hundreds I've played won't work so far) after I installed them.
Finally, with new sound drivers, you might want to try DOS UAE which is by -far- less resource hungry than the Windows version, making it better. DOS versions are always better than Windows ones if you have a compatable sound card (that's the only reason most use Windows emulators, WinUAE is the only Windows emu I've ever used I think full stop, that's only because I couldn't figure out how to configure DOS UAE properly but maybe you'll have better luck).
[ Edit 2 ]
One last thing, Amiga emulators run far better if you actually have the BIOS, if you do then just disregard this but if you don't then let me know and I'll either email it to you or post a link, whichever you'd prefer.
[This message has been edited by SpiritWolf (edited 03-19-2001).]
I'm unhappy... Keespace's persistant problems cosrt me my big post... *L* AND we seem to have killed the random topic!
Anyway, I'll have to reitterate a bit... Be a bit more brief...
Thanks a lot for the help. It helps to know where to look.
None of the things you suggested worked though. I haven't tried DOS UAE yet, however. I expect the fault may lie in one of two things:
1. Windows is a real mess on my vcomputer anda reinstall is long overdue but much dreaded. *L*
2. Er... What's this BIOS thing in this context? Obviously I don't have it then...
do I look stupid yet? *L*
Now, seeing as my inane questions have taken this topic even further off-topic than it was intended for, and have severely abused Angie's message Board, I am now officially open for suggestions on penance from everyone. Suggest it, and I will consider... Er... If I can.
Well...? *L*

just a tiny addendum... SpiritWolf, I fiddled some more with all the buttons and I have no idea what I did, but I have something I'm almost satisfied with now. *L*
Scary thing is, I'm a programmer. My employer is so doomed.

Mel> *Listens* *Blinks* *Listens again* ... But I'd feel sorry for the smurfs. o.O
Angie> *L* Reads the sign* ... pggg? What's pggg? *l* Strangely, your usual sig suddenly feels very appropriate. Please don't wave that stick at us?

Procrastination Granted?
Well, it would have to be in my case.
Get AIAB Arno, that'll make things a lot easier. When you get to the part in the instructions that asks for the BIOS / memory ROMs or whatever they are, the Kickstart thingydoofers, just ask me for them and I'll throw them up somewhere's.
Oh ... and you'd better reinstall soon, you do know what happens after the Windows registry has degraded far enough, don't you? Cross-linked files! Be afraid, be very afraid. So I'd certainly do it, dreaded or not. ;> Of course, reinstalls don't bother me much anymore, almost 90% of my programs are registry independant. {cackles}
I bet you are smart by the way Arno, just really lazy though, like me. ;> Well, maybe not ... I suppose your employer would be doomed if you were that. Maybe we should all send him a consolatory boquet of flowers or something?
{snickers} Stop kicking yourself, I've just seen every kind of emulator and platform there is ... and I'm just knowledgable in these things, I bet you'd leave me dry knowledge-wise when it comes to programming.
