Military Roadblock on Keenspace

Military Roadblock on Keenspace

Postby Kellogg on Sat Dec 07, 2002 7:05 am

Sigh. :(

I just got a note from a reader in the military that they've
blocked access to Keenspace. :(

I'm hoping that it's a local block set up because he's in
the Middle East and they don't want to offend anyone or
something and are therefore blocking "Porn Sites" :/

This really stinks, because my guess is a lot of readers
out there are in the military.

But, all I've got is one data point. Has anyone else heard
about this?

Question: Does anyone know how internet censorship programs
work? How do the various 'Child Safe' blockers select which
sites to block? Do they go by provider, or site, or URL?

Right now, the URL is techfox.keenspace.com. If I went to
Keenspace Premium, I would hope that the URL change could
get past the blocking software, in the case that Keenspace
is Black Listed somehow. But it also might block anything
coming from that same server. Does anyone have a clue how
this stuff really works?

In the meantime, We've got the high res site working as
backup. But, this really stinks. :(

If anyone's got any ideas, I'd sure appreciate it!

Thanks,

Scott

I'll ask around. OTOH, you might make a tri-wwekly mailing to those who don't want to miss the show, at least until the stupidity in the middle east is over.

Here comes the Men in Black....

:x Isn't it wonderful, how the men and women fighting for our rights and liberties, are deprived of the same?

I would be careful, though, Scott. If you are caught sending "subversive" material through e-mail, you could have a visit from some official-looking guys in cheap suits....

"We in the FBI don't have a sense of humor that we are aware of."

Now that I think of it, though, a frequent visitor of the forum works in a TV station out in Saudi Arabia, I believe. You might contact him, to see if he can set up a link locally. Or set up an e-mail distribution from out there.

You thinking of TVDave? It's probably worth looking into, but I don't think he posts here, I'm not even sure if he reads 21CF, he's over on the PlanetFurry boards (which, I might add, I haven't been able to access in at least two days or so, along with the Foxx Den).

Um, yeah, that's who I was thinking about.... I just didn't want to mention his name, in case the Men In Black were reading... :o

I can't keep track of which forums I post in, let alone anyone else....

And I haven't been able to get onto that forum, or into the Foxx Den either. What the H#ll is going on around here??? Is the entire Furry World going through a delayed Y2K??? Over the last couple of weeks, SOL, Jack, the Keenspace forum, and PlanetFurry have all either been down or acting really wonky.

Scott -- I've got his e-mail address (I'm considering helping him out with an editing job on a maximum tear-jerker he wrote; I'm not sure I've got the emotional stability to do a good job on it, but that's another story). Anyway: do you want me to drop him a note, and see if he's game?

<sigh> Sorry about the double posting.

Did I mention that the Keenspace forums were acting wonky?

What else can you expect when a computer line is being tapped...?

Not to be too mysterious, but, at the moment, I think for the
moment, we've got a workable solution for the individual stuck
in the sunnier climes.

I guess my main concern is that, while I know of One person
who's wanting to restore access, I don't know how many others
might be looking but unable to read. :/

Not to mention citizens in countries where they don't want
people to read western materials.

Hmm... Wish I could get my comics translated into Japanese
somehow. Haven't the slightest clue how though.

Sorry. My train of thought de-railed.
I was just thinking that the mixture of technology and characters might
find appeal with Japanese audiences. :)

Which would be kinda cool. :D

Let friends and relatives e-mail them. If you know of a member in the military over there copy and send as an e-mail attachment. Let them try and filter all those addresses. And the sensibilities of our so-called 'allies' be damned. 3rd world ****heads that refuse to leave the 14th century, to be VERY generous, should have no say in what our people can view. --doc
