I'm up to episode 18, and Mirelle just dramatically opened her father's watch. Then I notice the second hand jumps once a second... it's quartz.

Maybe this won't seem funny when I'm not sleep deprived.

I like Noir, but it tends to push even my HK action flick-inspired suspension of disbeleif. 20 or so mooks had their guns drawn and pointed at Kirika, then Kirika drew her guns and killed about half of them before they even got a single shot off.

I have Noir sitting on my hard drive waiting to watch, but school and work keep me too busy. Is it worth watching? I skimmed through the first 3 episodes and it seemed rather slow for a show about assassins.

You should watch Read or Die, it's another girls with guns show but it's very action oriented as well as very well done.

I'd say Noir is worthwhile, but it starts slow, and can be slow during the middle as well. I justify the time spend as a way of learning Japanese.

I'm reading the Read or Die manga right now, it's fun stuff. A bit more lighthearted than the anime, and I personally prefer the art style. Yomiko just got in a fight with a scotch tape ijin, who used his super scotch tape powers to tear the side off a building.

I really wish either a) I could learn Japanese or b) companies would release english translations at a faster pace than 2-3 years after something is popular in Japan.

I watched Excel Saga over the weekend.. Only 1 DVD out here so I had to go and the fan sub. The only thing more messed up than Excel Saga is the Puni Puni Poemi OAV that goes with it.

Excel Saga is damned good, but it is also well and truly messed up.

My younger brother snuck up on me while I was watching it. He's watching Hyatt and asks why she has purple hair (he's one of the uninitiated to animedom). Moment later she coughs up blood and dies. He actually looked shell shocked. I think I need to hook him on some Ranma or something simple like that.

Haha, I can see how Hyatt suddenly dying can be shocking to someone who hasn't seen anime before.

I'm reading the Excel manga too, it's surprisingly similar in feel to the anime. I would have a lot of the jokes could only be done with the timing of anime, but they somehow work. Of course, there's no Nabeshin.

What do you do for a job?

At the yen prices I've seen listed for manga and anime over there, you must be either very wealthy or starving.

At $30 bucks a pop back home I've taken to only getting what I really want and finding... alternate sources for the rest.

Nah, I'm not rich. But maybe your yen conversion is off, manga is hella cheap here. $5-8 for a graphic novel, although the paper isn't as nice as what you'd get in the west.

I do most my manga shopping at Book Off, it's a used bookstore chain that's about 2/3rds manga. $1 for a really old manga, $2-3 for newer ones. I've walked out of there with giant shopping bags filled with comics a few times.

But anime... that's bloody pricey. $50-$60 for a DVD with 2 or 3 eps. They don't have english subtitles, so I can kinda justify my dling of fansubs

I might spring for the Spirited Away DVD tho, it has english.

That's actually quite cheap.. I was taking the prices on Viz Video and converting to yen. Though Viz is a big rip off itself.

I justify my fansubs as a need to eat. Come January I pay another $3000 in tuition as well as needing to upgrade my computer. Athlon 1200 is decently fast, but spending long lengths of time compiling and then having it overheat get old fast.

Last year I went to the local big con put on by the University of Alberta people and bought some really cheap box sets. Turns out they are HK rips, but at the time I didn't realize this. They actually turned out to be quite good, no spelling mistakes or artifacts in the videos. Spent $200 and walked away with 8 box sets and a dozen DVD's.

What I wish I could find is the Slayer's novels in english. I got hooked bad on Slayers and knowing there is so much more out there drives me nuts. I keep saying that one of these days I'm going to learn Japanese properly instead of picking up stupid pop culture phrases from anime. But I'm more likely to finish learning french before I get around to doing that. How did you get your start?

3 years of high school, and another year at university. The high school years were relatively lax tho, I can't remember if I skipped 1 or 2 unversity courses of Japanese.
