Photoshop query!

Post by ZOMBIE USER 8124 »

I was wondering if anyone would have an answer to this question for me-

*My Photoshop crashes every 9 times out of 10 when it tries to load fonts on start up. I have an awful lot of fonts, and I use all of them. Would a font sorter solve my problem, and if it will, where can I download one. And if that won't solve my problem, then what will? I am curious because starting Photoshop has been a pain in the butt for the past year and a half. Thanks!

You might not have enough workable RAM. Photoshop is RAM intensive and if you are short it can crash

Nah, I thought about that, but this didn't happen until I installed the fonts.
Hmmm...font sorter, font sorter...where are you...?
But thanks! ^_^

i was gonna say the same thing, what you might try if you don't have that much RAM and don't want to get more is to reduce the size of the storage space Photoshop uses to keep everything you do in memory, so you can continually undo changes

Nope. I tried it, and it crashed again ^^;
The chances of it crashing can be reduced by turning off my graphics drivers. Is that wierd or what?

You using Mac OS, or Windows? If Windows, then that's probably your first problem. Doubly worse if you're using XP (after all, that's the emoticon for "BLEEEECH!") instead of 2000. :-?

Also useful in coming up with an answer to this question would be the version number of Photoshop you have.

I have ver 6.0.1 and I'm running Windows ME. Like I said, never had a problem until fonts. (Evil fonts, evil!)

It works great when it finally gets up.
And you know, I never thought about the emoticon for "Bleahhh" thing. That's great! ^_^ I hate Windows XP! But I seem to be the only one who likes ME *huggles ME* I've never had a problem with it.

Hope this helps!

Oh, and the error it gives me is:

PHOTOSHOP has caused an error in USER.EXE
If you continue to experience problems, try blah blah blah. (You get the point)

Hope this helps more! ^_^

I'd guess you probably have a damaged font file, or one of your fonts is written over a bad sector on your hard-drive (HDD). When Photoshop tries to load, the damaged file eats up an abnormal amount of resources and crashes the program.

I'd say start by doing a thorugh scandisk if you haven't done one recently. (Start it before you go to bed and let it run overnight, it takes a few hours ... remember to either disable your screensaver, or run it in safe mode). If the scandisk comes out clean, it's probably a problem with an individual file.

The best way to do a search for a damaged file when you have a huge number to work with is to go by halves. Move half the fonts out of your font folder and test Photoshop a couple of times to see if it still crashes. If it does, the problem is with one of the fonts still in the folder. If it doesn't, the problem is with one of the fonts you moved out (test with that group to be sure). Keep cutting the group with the problem font in half until you've isolated it. (You could have multiple damaged files, which would complicate matters... but unless you have a bad HDD sector it's statistically unlikely).

On an aside, I never had problems with ME when it was on my machine, but I can relate nightmares trying to fix problems with it on other people's computers. XP I absolutely love, although I would advise against the Professional edition (another troubleshooting nightmare). Never used or had to fix 2000, but I've heard good things about it.

and if that doesn't work you can check what it uses for scratchdisks. though it's not supposed to get stuck on that till you open a file.
or. lol. re-install photoshop.
or get rid of that stupid, stupid eye-candy windows ME and intall win 2000.

.. what am I doing giving advice? I don't know jack-shit.

Anyways I used to have a similar problem with my photoshop; it used to crash every 2 to 3 minutes. Fun, fun. ^_^
The only way I fixed my broblem was re-formatting :(

Hmmm...I'll have to try that file moving thing and see if one of the files is damaged.

As for you Jamie!...

if it's a user.exe error, it might be that your font is stored in a different user directory, depending on if you're signed on as the admin or a user, and it just doesn't want to correctly read it from that different directory, so maybe try checking on that... not sure how ME works, since I use and love XP and to a lesser degree 98 SE, never had any problems myself with Photoshop, even after installing new fonts

Font font font fonts, the bane of all things RAM like...

I'll just start by saying I know absoloute jack about these kinda' Hardware type things, but, ummm, as far as I know Fonts are evil...

EEVIL...

Ummmm... Yeeshhh. I'm not completely sure, but I think Fonts are always shoved into the RAM since startup, and if you've got a helluva lot of them then you'll get a lot of problems. I've never had it to the degree where it crashes Photoshop all the time (only now and again) but it's quite noticeable with 3DS MAX and Maya, all I know is that removing fonts is good and makes things run more reliable...

So... Ummm... Lots of fonts = Bad... But, err, it could have been a number of things that made my computer run nicer, you can never tell...

I'll just, ummm, get my coat shall I?

*runs and slaps ME on the way out*

hmm..
I have to say my photoshop has been really really taking it's time
loading ever since I installed about 30 extra fonts.
XD It crashes all the time fighting over RAM with windows XP too XDD

[photoshop 6.0: Hey!! That's MY kilobyte!!
Windows XP: Nuh-uh!! I saw it first!! Windows was using that!
Photoshop: Get your stinky two-bit hands off that!!
Windows XP: Oh yeah?! That's it: I'm going to knock you dead today!!]

I had almost 300 fonts installed in my machine at one time. Needless to say there was a massive improvement in performance once I got rid of most of them.

Hooray! It's fixed!
chascraw4d was right, it was a corrupted font file. A ding file! *shudder*
It was called something like "B5 wingdings" and I was able to boot Photoshop 5 times in a row without having it crash!!!
THANK YOU!!!! *cries* ;_;
I can't believe this is over one lousy font!!! And a wingding font at that, which I hardly ever use those!

Oh, and Ghastly, what speed is your processor?
I have an Intel Celeron 466 in an Emachines tower (hey, it was free, ok!? I haven't had a problem with EMachines!) with 160 MB of RAM and a 20 Gig hardrive. Plus I have...

Get ready for this, you'll all die...

...940 fonts on my computer...

I deleted most of my ding fonts except for system dings (8 fonts)
So I used to have 948 fonts. Geez....and I use most of them on a regular basis, too!
I died when I saw it, let me tell all of you!
However, thank you to everyone who helped out! (Even to those who slapped ME and ran away...

I have a sad little P-II 333 with 256M memory. It crashes all the time. But it is a hell of a lot better than the P-166/32M that I was running before. I still have that machine although it's been stripped down and delegated to the role of dedicated digital audio effects processor in my studio.
