What do your draw your comic on?

Post by MixedMyth »

This is mostly just to sate my own curiosity. Those of you who don't do completely CG work...what do you draw your comic on? I was wondering if there are many other people who are as, eh, uncouthe as I am. See, I do most of my comics on a normal sheet of printer paper, folded in half. ;} One comic on each side. The large color ones I do on bristol board, though.

Xerox premium multi-purpose!

Post by KedaDibandion »

I just use printer paper, too. Xerox Premium Multi-Purpose 800-sheet SUPER REAM! Yeah!
Just one page for each comic; saves space in my filing cabinet!
I would use nicer paper, but I tried that once and it didn't make a single difference. Probably might matter if I used markers or paint or something to color them, but I do any coloring in Photoshop Elements (the cheap Photoshop! yay!).
So...I don't think printer paper is uncouth at all! It's really, um, couth!
:D

Something is currently HERE.

I use reflex paper. It's good, and the ink dosen't tend to bleed on it.

The dead flesh of my fallen enemies.

No, wait, it's printer paper.

Not ready to make the bristol board investment just yet.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

Back in the days of yonder... 'Twas printing paper... Or any scraps I could lay my hands on, including recycled paper, lined paper and TP...

But I find Digital paper so much better now. Photoshop all the way, plus a wacom tablet, mmmm, so much easier...

*hugs Wacom Tablet*

I wuv you so!

Wait... Colour? Without Photoshop? Is such a thing possible?! Does this not obey the laws of Physics?! And what's this Bristol Board thou seemst to talketh of? Is this part of the evil concoction towards colour without PhotoShop too? Mmmm, the world is a strange place... o.O

I use mostly bristol board. It's much nicer when using brushes than regular old printer paper. If you're not using a heavy inking technique, you probably don't need bristol.

Also, when I did the colored pencil strips awhile ago, the bristol was SWEEEEEEEET!

I have a storyline coming up that will be done on watercolor paper in ink and watercolors. Cool, no?

Scrubbo you are a brave man.

Ive been drawing in my scetch pad, but one of my friends recently suggested using cardstock.

What do people use to ink, ive had to leave my comic in pencil because the ink completely obliterates details. (I was using one of those uniball pens)

I use micron technical pens and a micron brush pen. You can get a variety of sizes in the pens, which is nice. And the brush pen is a good way to start trying "brushes" as it's much cheaper than actually setting yourself up with a good brush and inkwell.

However, the brush pens tend to wear out pretty quickly, i.e. lose their pointyness. At which point you set them aside for doing "fills" and use a new one.

I've gotten to the point where I'm gonna look into getting some nice sable brushes to ink with.

B4 Manga paper. It's nice heavy stuff, and smooth for inking. Only problem is that it's too small for my tastes. I wish I could get 10" by 15" manga paper here in Japan, but B4 is the standard. For larger stuff I'm using an F3 sketchpad ruled down to 10 by 15, but it's a bit coarser than I'd like.

I use a sakura micron pen for inking details, and larger pilot pens for the thick lines.

I would love to have a drawing desk and be able to use bristol board but I have a further complication that not all webcomic artists have.

I'm a father of two young children and I draw a hentai webcomic.

That means I have to have the ability to instantly hide anything I'm drawing (even though, if you look through all the panels of my comic strip very few of the drawings are actually ecchi in and of themselves). Thus I use a hard covered sketchbook for all my drawings and draw one panel per page then assemble them into a strip on the computer.

Instead of a desk I've got a clipboard, but it's a cool clipboard. It opens up and inside it has all sorts of art supplies stored in it.

After scanning I use Paint Shop Pro to CG shade all my strips.

For pencil sketches I use .5mm mechanical pencil with an HB lead. Then I ink with some Staedtler drafting pens.

Actually I'm contemplating creating a new story driven non-hentai 3/week comic and one of the things I want to do is draw in a less "cartoony" style than I do my current comic in. One of the things I've been considering is using my graphics tablet to do the entire comic paperless.

After I got my wacom I became addicted to Oekaki and I was thinking it might be kind of neat to make a comic where I draw (but don't letter) each panel on an Oekaki BBS. So during the week while I'm drawing my comic each panel of the page is drawn on a different Oekaki BBS somewhere out on the internet, scattered all over the place. People could try to hunt down all the different drawings if they wanted. At the end of the week I coalate all the drawings into a page and letter them and post them on my comic site.

It would work fine for a 1/week comic but I think it would be a little too time consuming for a 3/week comic.

I like the way the PaintBBS Oekaki program let's you draw in a pencil sketch style. (warning: H-Pic)

Generic drawing pad. It's awfully fiberous.
Micron .005 and .08 black. I pretend I know how to use those for inking.
I use a 4H pencil to do my lineart, though it's usually too soft, and I still get dark lines.
I keep a HB on hand to remind me why 4H is better.

I use the edge of another piece of paper to do straight lines. Which results in a very *cough* lame appearance for anything that's supposed to have straight lines.

I back all this up with some wiz tricks on photoshop 6.0. Filters are the wannabe-artist's best friend.

Anyone know >where< I can get a tablet?

Zellers brand Mechanical pencil... actually I have a really good one there now, but the leads were bought at a dollar store so ICK! For inking I use a Micron(stolen form a friend) but my wonderful fabulous girlfriend is buying me a bunch more since she knows inking materials better than I do(I'm a penciller at heart). And all of this goes onto a 4 dollar sketch book I bought because the paper was VERY white and I hate playing with my scanner settings to make the paper seem whiter because the darkness of my lines fade...[melodrama]*sigh* the complications og being an artist![/melodrama]. Oh and Scrubby, those Micron brush pens are DAMN fun! I just got to play with a few the other day before a movie started(drawing in a crowded theatre gets you lots of attention btw).

I used 70-lb drawing paper, necessary because of heavy inking with duck-billed pen

I draw on...

paper!

Yep, i'm among the masses who just draw on computer paper for my comic. Mostly because I would go broke if I did my normal comic on bristol board or anything. I tend to reserve my precious bristol board for more important illustration projects.

I use a pencil with HB lead, then go over with ink ( I think i'm using a pilot v3000 tech pen or something like that.. bought it at the college bookstore..)
and then I shade with a 6b pencil. Add a few touches of texture for BGs and text in photoshop and voila!

I have a wacom tablet, but I personally don't like it much. I find paper and pencil tend to work out better for me. I guess I'm just rooted in the old school of getting pencil all over my hands. ^_^

I currently draw entirly on computer with my wacom tablet MMmmmm.
A) Draw a strip in vector program (easy for colour but lacks details)
B) Draw a strip in Painter Classic (time consuming)
C) Draw in PSP7 (UGLY)

I'm trying to invest in pencils and trying to get my doodles up to scratch as I'm often held back by my dependicy on my tablet. MY ALL NEW DRAWING STYLE along with the resumtion of my comic start on the first of next month... BE THERE!
