Interesting facts for August 1, 2002:

No news is Good News, Right?

Not exactly. From now on, all news will be stored in the Keenspace Forums. For those of you new to the site, just use the link above to the Forums... it's the one marked "Forum". (Riiiight.) As for this space down here, I plan to use this space to bring you up to speed on things happening in Starship Moonhawk, The Adventures of Milea, and help define some of the terms used in the comics. I try to use real Navy nomenclature in the series, so some people may get lost in the acronyms and terminology.

For example, in the August 1st page, at the end, Chief Warrant Officer Ael Delenaria makes a reference to the POD bulletin board. Now, for our Naval readers, this is obvious, as you would use it every day (most likely without even thinking about it).

The POD is short for Plan of the Day. On naval duty stations, the plan of the day list all of the days events, schedules activities and meals as well as name the duty officers and duty petty officers. (among other things critical to that day's events.) This is where the crew gets most of their news from and lets the members of the crew function together.

In the 30th Century world of The Adventures of Milea, the POD is posted electronically on the Personnel Data System through the central computer. A sailor can log onto the system from any active terminal and retrieve the POD.

For future reference, all of these tidbits will be posted in the forums under the heading "INTERESTING FACTS".

All explanations here in the "interesting facts" section come from accounts relayed by actual military personnel, or from The Bluejackets' Manual, Twenty-First Edition (c) 1991. (I suppose I could get a more current edition, but most of what I use from it is generic info that has been used for decades without change.)

Been a While...

Post by Admiral Gilliad Cobalt »

I was sitting here thinking I haven't posted anything relevant here for a while, so let's see... what to say:

Q) Is the Federation a parody of The Federation from 'Star Trek'?
A) No, and yes. In actuality, they are an homage to the Federation from 'Star Trek' in that they are a grouping of planets joined for common gain. That's about where the similarity ends. The Federation as depicted in Starship Moonhawk and The ADventures of Milea is an organization bent on pacification at any cost. They aren't inherently evil, per se, but their methods for attaining peace in their little corner of the galaxy might upset our sensibilities on the subject.

Q) Is it just me, or does Admiral Cobalt look just like Johnathan Frakes from Star Trek: TNG?
A) Yes, and actually, I threw this question in as a joke.

Q) How big is the Starship Moonhawk?
A) My official statement on the subject is that the Moonhawk is approximately 12,500 feet, or just over 2 1/2 miles long. On a side note, Rachael Harrison, the pilot officer, jogs the length of the ship and back from bow to stern in two circuits every day. She almost never uses the ship's gymnasium.

That's it for now. Watch this space for more interesting stuff about the series!
