Not too shabby, the humor reminds me of Penny Arcade at times. I especially liked

Well... Honestly I figure any award I get, (even if I'm asking for it ) I should truly deserve. And in this case I'M the one that has too feel I deserve it. And I'm 5000 times as hard to please as any audience. Once I truly know my characters, and everything is as I really want it too be. I'll ask for my award =D.
You know what the most annoying thing about promotion is? You'll post about it on all these sites and get tons of reviews of people that love it. But all it takes is one "That sucks, not funny at all" To make it feel way less >=. I love constructive critiscisim, (whether I agree with it or not it's nice to know that they payed enough attention too it too make a critiscism =)) but that unconstructive stuff just sucks =.
Sorry to rant, I just had to get it off my chest =).

I know how you feel, when I first started out, there were times my posts were ignored, which is even worse than being ripped. In fact, the first post I ever made was spam (before I knew what spam was) and the reactions were very mean spirited. One in particular said, "Very Unfunny." Since then, I have improved and gotten enough praise to feel decent about my work, but you always remember the worst things said. You can lessen the chances of those reactions by building a relationship with the people on the boards before posting something that might be seen as spam.

When you put something out there, and ask it to be judged, you have to be prepared for the worst. Ignore the jerks that rip it, and take the other comments as constructive criticism. Read your own work, see if their arguments have merit. If not, ignore them. If so, work on whatever weaknesses you have. But most of all, do the comic because it's what you want to do. We all go through stages in the careers of our comics where we are unsure, hate it, or wish we were doing something else. Work yourself through it, while writing down any other ideas you might have, which you can add to your comic, or work on outside of that comic.
phew....I've rambled long enough.

Good advice, I learned by the third day I had the comic up I better not do it for anyone but myself... Everyone likes a different comic, or they don't like it at all. If I did was doing it for anyone but myself I'd be utterly miserable =).
It's really nice to get the support of guys like you though, who have been doing it for awhile, and know where I'm comin' from.
Thanks for the advice! Much appreciated =).

I've been very fortunate that Vicious Lies never really attracted any strong negative comments from anyone other than myself. The worst I get is "Why haven't you updated?"
And I can stand that one, because they're right? Why haven't I updated?
I'm my own worst critic. Folks like David Wright, BoxJam, Warren Lawrence, Chris Furniss,Lee Adam Herold, Howard Tayler, Randy Tayler, Brad Guigar, Dave Kellett, Daniel Willingham,
Tailsteak, Capheine, and Dan Frioli have all been amazingly helpful and supportive. You just gotta find the right folks, and you'll love doing this.
Even if you don't update enough, like me.
There are some folks who like saying things like "Stupidest comic ever." Ignore them. And set your sights high. I talked to BoxJam before I ever started a comic, partially because I originally intended a minimalist comic like his, and partially because he's my absolute favorite. Find the folks you like and ask for help when you need it; find the folks you don't, and learn to ignore them completely.
Your comic is diggable; I'm sure to return.
--Strange/Dave

I actually agree. Which is why I post asking opinions... I'd waaaay rather have 1 person say something about me site (complimentive or constructive critique) then 5 people read it all the time and never say anything.
personal preference =).
I also love getting responces from other web comicers ;D. It's very cool to see people whose work you respect give some to your. Kinda makes it all worth it.

I've always considered direct plugs (COME READ MY COMIC) a little too much like being approached by a hooker. Even if she says that she's REALLY HONESTLY attracted to you, her motivations are never 100% unquestionable.
While I HAVE posted a few "check this out" messages on boards from time to time, I find my most profitable exchanges come from just plain joining the conversations at hand. Put your URL in your .sig, and if your natural wit and humour shine through in your responses, people will want to check your strip out without any overt plugging.
I also keep a keen eye out for synchronicity in strips I like -- for instance, there was a weird coincidence where both Bruno the Bandit and Man-Man were running parodies of DC Comics' The Sandman at the same time. I wrote Ian an e-mail saying "check this out -- isn't that weird?" and wound up getting a very nice plug on his main site and (possibly) several new readers.
Getting back to the hookers -- women running around screaming "LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME" are far less appealing than a witty, classy, self-assertive gal with a gift for good jokes and great conversation.
