KeenSpace phpBB 2.0 is complete! (I hope!)
The topic says it all. Just to get you up to speed, the forums were being upgraded from clunky version 1.4.4 to version 2.0 Final! As Gene himself and others experienced at the Heebas forum (and I hope you will as well...), the advantages (Polls, Visual avatars (80x80pixels maximum), prev/next topic buttons, auto-logon at every visit, etc.) may outweigh more than the disadvasntages! They're still tweeking the Keenspot forums (KeenAdmins only for right now... may've changed by the time you read this) for 2.0, but once they're done, the Keen* forums will never be the same again!

Well, it's 6:00 PST and I've been able to access this forum
faster than I have all week, so it looks like they may be up
and running again! Of course, I put a note on my web page
yesterday to have my readers try my Keenspot forum
instead of this one because it was running then, so NATURALLY
as soon as I do that, my Keenspace forum starts working
again! Figures...

It - is - ALIVE!!!!
Well, it's a bit slow still - but yes, it does appear to be alive.
Another few days and I'd be doing my best to post via Sight of the Soul. Thankfully, this bizarre and possibly embarrassing effort will not be required. Does Starbucks sell Coffee2 in your area? Around here, they just look at me funny and recommend decaf...

Huh. We don't have a Starbucks in our area. I don't think they've reached the south-west toe of the UK yet.UncleMonty wrote:Does Starbucks sell Coffee2 in your area? Around here, they just look at me funny and recommend decaf...

Could be good, kitty :>
Gotta say though, yep.. at least it loads now, as opposed to the last two weeks.
Things that still seem broken though:
It took like three minutes to open it at start..
It took nearly as long to login..
After logging in, it takes you to an unnecessary general listings page..
It didn't capture the original subject, when replying to thread..
and
the insertion point is buzzing!
ah well.. I say, if it ain't broke, why fix it, ..but if they gotta mess with it, at least it seems to be better now..
and unfortunately, the -other- nicer version (in your other forum link) doesn't accept my password. Fancy that, it works here, and not there.. eeesh 8|
hehheh.. well, good to get back into the neighborhood, after two weeks.. Hope everyone else can too *fluffle* :>
PS.... I went to post this, and it had also forgotten my login! Then it took near three minutes to open this reply window!
blecch..

i might be wrong... but..
I have a guess as to why this program is creeeeeaking along so ploddingly..
With the sheer volume of these boards, it appears that this program is not built to handle it fully.
The PHP seems to be -fully- generating each page at every call, instead of caching the major segments separately from the recent/dynamic additions and function calls.
With all that it is trying to do, it would benefit from storing most of the information in a cache method, instead of trying to rebuild each and everything every single time (like some versions of NetScape do, as opposed to the instant caching that Explorer usually does).
The program is valiantly trying to do a LOT of stuff, but taking 3 minutes for many functions isn't very appealing, especially when it was so brisk before, and this is a DSL connection
I cringe to think of trying it on my laptop!
Ah well.. just a few bits of input .. hope it helps.

It looks like the forums do indeed need more tweaking, but at
least they are working on it. (And yes, all the things you reported
are happening to me too...) One thing I can say about the deal
with the passwords - being a forum member of Keenspot doesn't
automatically make you a forum member of Keenspace and vice
versa! But most of you may know that already, in which case I
been talking to myself... <=)

You might need to pitch in yourself, however I can help you by supplying this link: *Fixed for phpBB 2.0.0* Feel free to copy the new url, for the old one might've been more compatible with the obsolete 1.4.4, but I digress!Gene Catlow wrote:It looks like the forums do indeed need more tweaking, but at

For those who thought otherwise, join the club of those who learned the hard way! I did when Gene first started his strip!Gene Catlow also wrote:One thing I can say about the deal

Testing
One, two, three... She's flying! (If you're reading this.)
Minor grumble: Clicking reply took me to the log-in page which took me to the main Keenspace board page, a big long loader, down which I had to track to find Gene's forum again, and from there back to this thread - I miss being able to post just by typing in username and password in the message-form. (I'm a bit of a post-and-run guy.)

Well, you could just click on the "log me in every time" check box so that all you have to do it type in the message.Tim Tylor wrote:I miss being able to post just by typing in username and password in the message-form. (I'm a bit of a post-and-run guy.)
