The wind direction. I had just got a faceful of smoke from the fire...and the photographer chose that precise moment to shoot the pic. Do you see the hatchet in my hand? I tried to use that on the camera, but he got awayOn 2002-04-11 15:05, DeByrus wrote:
And just what reason might that be?
A grand total of three hours of work. Cheap, too, except for the core (which is a carbon fiber rod)...my first attempt at a LARP weapon. It wasn't made for fighting, though, it was mainly a symbol of status for my character. I used a short staff (you can see it in later pics) for the fights (with a considerable amount of success, I might add). Anyway, I was the group's thinker, not a fighter. The character I played (Caelryn the Wanderer) was a gypsy type who had traveled most of the known world and had an insane amount of background knowledge. The others involved were an irish celt (the guy with the cape), two scots (obvious) and a germanic smith who claimed his hammer was a 'gift of Thor' (the guy with the BIG hammer). On 2002-04-11 15:10, Arcaton wrote:

Striker, Don't take this the wrong way, but your outfit looks like a set of pajamas, and you just decided to wear your sword to bed.
I reccommend, if you can sew, doing some decorative hemwork on the tunic. Also, I'd make the sleeve either be tighter at the top and then flare more towards the cuff, or be as is and come in tighter at the cuff. Also, a cape/cloak and some period-style boots would go really well too.
Sorry, I pride myself on my fantasy costume designs
-K, sticking his nose where it's not wanted since 1978!

1.) The outfit was meant to look like that, although I didn't get the color quite right. I was aiming for a 'dirtier' shade of green. With full 'accessories' (staff, sword, several amulets, my 'medicine bag' and the hooded cloak it would have included if it hadn't been forgotten at home) it actually looked rather cool. You're right about the lack of hemwork, but the big secret about this is...I can't sew. As in, not at all. It was also the first costume I ever made myself, so I deliberately picked the most simple design in existence - a historical outfit worn just like this by the franks of the early medieval. The green was part of the character backstory, but again, I couldn't get the color right.
2.) About the sword: No, it was not edged. The 'metal' is silver duct tape over foam rubber. The carbon fiber core was a 0.6 cm one usually used for constructing kites. The staff was simply a length of solid wood with an insulation pipe around it and more duct tape wrapped layered around that. Duct tape is the LARPer's best friend, and I kept two rolls of different colors in my 'medicine bag' at all times for minor repairs to my friends' equipment

Duct tape has also nicknames like "McGyver- tape" and "Jesus-tape" beacuse it heals everything: you can repair your weapons, your clothing, bottles, windows, your car with duct tape. You can ever make string from duct tape.
Check this out. I beleve this http://personal.inet.fi/cool/sipi/rr5/kuvia.htm is from Wing Commander-based larp with kilrathi of course.
