I'm getting the sensation that "Avatar" means something to do with the forums, at least in this context. What does it mean?

(I posted this outside the Avatar Request thread because it's not really the same topic.)

See the card beneath me, that's an Avatar. Post your profile and I make you an Avatar Card. Aeires, Mine, Woofaboomus have been made and I already have a few more sketched out.
