Imaging Software Question

I jusr got a new computer and, as a result, I'm looking into new imaging software.

I see that there are several different options from Adobe (Illustrator, Photoshop Elements, PhotoDeluxe, et al.) And there's also this "Gimp" (gimp.org) that everyone loves to use.

My question is, "What is the best I can do for under $100?"

What kind of system do you run? The GIMP is completely free, and runs under Linux or Mac OS X. They also have a Windows version, I believe. Check out http://www.gimp.org. This is the program I use, and I'm wild about it. It's a lot like PhotoShop, it can't do a lot of things like CMYK colorspace or Pantone (both of which are useless for Web graphics anyway).

Definitely Windows. That's why I'm kind of iffy on the Gimp.

Adobe has a couple of products under $100.

I say give paintshop pro a chance. The only thing its lacking (once you get used to the changed interface, which you'd honestly have to do with any new program) is texture plugins and such. I do my comic completely on Paint Shop Pro.

Maybe I'm confused but I believe that Paint Shop Pro is way over $100 bucks. It's a while since I got 6.0 though.

Use GIMP because it is free and I use it.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned piracy. not that I use piracy, or anything.... moving along..

I got Photoshop 6 (LEGIT I SWARE) for christmas, and it was like 120 I think.

well, i'm a BIIG fan of the GIMP, screwball, and I've run it on both windows 95 and Windiws 2000 with practically no problems, ever!

The only thing that used to suck about the GIMP for me was that on my old computer, it would eat up system resources FAST, so you'd have to save your work and exit GIMP and then get back in every so often to prevent a system freeze.

But my new 'pooter, with its 1Gig processor and 256MB RAM hasn't needed the reboot, EVER.

Give it a try, at least, Screwball, because it IS free, and you can always try something else if you don't like it.

(I also use Photoshop LE for lettering, because that's the only thing I find it does better than the GIMP, really)

The only reason I wouldn't give it a try was because I felt that it might destroy the new computer. ("the")

This sounds like a weekend project, but I'll try and give'er a look-see.

well, like i said, i've had it on both Win 95 (for more than a year!) and Win 2000 (for about two months now!), and it's NEVER caused a 'pooter problem.

I'd saythat GIMP is safe to try oput, man.
