The Bench is down. When I tried to go to the main page and Penny Arcade, I got a whole bunch of "MySQL failed to connect" errors. Now I just get DNS errors from the Bench...I can't load it at all.
------------------

In countless documents sent straight to the shredder
That might finally give us the whole of the picture
But until the day we decide to dig a little deeper

Under fallen rocks and stones
At the end of a disconnected phone
Down an unmarked street
And buried, deep beneath your feet."

Pete, that's encouraging news from Rossman.
I'd emailed Tycho volunteering to do the approval stuff if he wanted, or suggesting he farm it out to several of us.
It occurs to me that a "committee" might be neat for the sunday news updates. E.g. (purely hypothetically) say you, me, and CapTVK were in charge of that. We could each independently pick our nominees for "pick of the week" and only the ones that showed up on at least 2 of our lists would get featured. Or if we want to be more generous, the ones that show up on ANY of our lists. But this would indeed be a commitment. I wonder if the sunday news blurbs are needed or integral. I know I read all the strips anyway.
The actual approval process itself seems very easy: Tycho seemed to accept anything no matter how bad. So I think that policy should continue. (Sometimes the really bad ones are unintentionally funny, e.g. "My god it's yet another Waiting for Godot joke, and they can't even spell Godot!") I assume Tycho only rejected stuff that was obviously illegal (e.g. if someone submitted a strip from a different comic, or if someone submitted some blatant hate speech or porn -- which is admittedly a hazy line.)

------------------

I got a reply from Rossman

quote:

I plan on keeping it the same as it was for now (except no god-damn ads), and then looking for improvements sent in by the community, and if they are requested enough, I will implement them. If he doesn't want to be in charge, I will continue things on as best I can, doing things the way I think he would have done them. If you all write to me and tell me I'm doing stupid things with it, I will listen and do whatever I can to accomodate you guys

That's good news, it seems Rossman will take care of the hosting and technical site but leaves the issue of the sunday postings et al floating in the air for now.
It's an issue worth of debate...

I did ONE way back before I started cartooning. It took me several hours and was quite, quite awful. Maybe I'll do another one someday.
I did use the Bench JPG's on a birthdy card, though. It was nift-terrific.
::shrugs::
------------------

more info! Which # was it, or what was your author name?
Not that it matters immediately, because I see that www.bench.org is in transit now and inaccessible... yikes! Hopefully Rossman gets it up and running smoothly soon at his cozy new home for it.
------------------

Perhaps you are right, Scott, but after seeing nonsense like the Donald B. Jones III controversy, I must confess my estimation of the average PA reader's sophistication dropped rapidly... not that they're all like that, but sheesh! There's only so much "PA rulez, (insert some other comic) suxxors, U r fagot" kewl dewd blathering I can put up with before I flip the bozo switch on them.

Tried to hide my dark past, there.
Ugh! I did one because one of my old newsletter buddies did one. He's like #128 and it has to do with Tresspasser. At least that one's funny (as opposed to mine).

Which shirt? I don't even know if you're talking about my strip (UF SUX? L337?) or Screwball's strip.
I don't get what's going on with the shirt in Screwball's strip, probably because I'm not very familiar with Alvin and the Chipmunks...
------------------

Eugh! This is terribly embarrassing to have you guys discussing this cartoon that was ridiculously awful. I apologize for impinging on your eyes with this monstrosity. (Now that's going in my Quotes section!)
Anyway there were three chipmunks Alvin Simon, and Theodore. Alvin wore red and a hat with the letter "A." Theodore was green, Simon was blue. This is the theme song to their (fuzzy on dates here) mid-80'searly-90's cartoon.
Ross Bagdasarian was the creator of Alvin and the Chipmunks and did all of the original voices. However, at the time I did the cartoon and the time I watched the show I didn't know who he was or why his name was always at the end of the show. It bothered me and I was hoping for an answer. Sheesh! Maybe I have to make my "triumphant" return to Bench someday with this big a following.
Of course, I'd have to read the 4000+ or whatnot comics on my narrowband...

------------------

Actually, I'm talking about PDI's third strip. I know enough 'leet speak to decypher your Jones strip shirts.
Tycho is taking the place of Theodore, the fat chipmunk who was always eating. Their singing the Chipmunk themesong ("We're the Chipmunks! Alvin, Simon,... Theodore! Do do, do-do-do-do!") I have no clue who Ross Bagdasarian was though
------------------
