I still love the 16-bit RPGs. Chrono Trigger. Earthbound. Aahh. . .
Though I like the new ones too.

Never really played those. I guess I like them OK, except when the sprites star in yet ANOTHER profanity-laden goddamn Keenspace comic.

Yeah, I hated Q*Bert too.

Number Cruncher.

Number Cruncher for the Atari was the worst god-dammed game ever made, but it flashed subliminal messages at you that made you play for hours and hours trying to get the high numbers stuck under your wheel to rack up big points.
But my god, did it suck.

So's I was over at my friend Mark's the other night to watch Buffy, and before Buffy was playing games on his Playstation while he and Bill were in the kitchen making pretzels.
Um...more on Mark and Bill's alternative lifestyle another time, maybe.
I checked out a few games and found they were so GODDAMN COMPLICATED that it hurt to play them! I was trying the "kid-targeted" "Oddworld" game, and after twenty minutes, realized that I had to go through a convoluted series of about 36 buttons JUST TO GET PAST ONE SCREEN IN THE FIRST LEVEL OF THE GAME. R1 to run, R2 to sneak, then hold down L2 and push the triangle to talk to the alien, then have him follow you while you jump (circle) across and duck (down) to throw (X) the bomb before hiding in shadows (R2)...
HOLY CRAPADOOLAHEY! When did console games get more complicated than Civ2?
The best games I ever played were on the Commodore God Damned 64. It had a joystick with ONE BUTTON.
ONE.
BUTTON.
And "Archon" STILL kicks the ass of any 1st-person shooter on the market.
Angry old man,

------------------

I too have had such an 'old man' experience as Shep. XBOX - Halo. Having a 15 year old walk me through the buttons as if I was a chimp with a learning disability was very disconcerting.
And the damn console vibrates when you shoot! Newfangled contraptions. Kind of adds a new tactile dimension to that "hold on to your joystick" pun.
We couldn't afford the flash and gadgetry of a Commodore 64. We had a TRS 80 Radio Shack computer, that used regular audio cassettes and a tape deck as a "disk drive". Pitfall rocks. Zaxxon too...
