First off I think the CCA was well done, particularly as a first time effort. But I have some comments as to how I think things could be improved.
1. If the awards are to be more meaningful they need to be run by a more formal organization. This would help institutionalize knowledge about running it and lend further credibility to it being more than a Keen- only event. Starting such a group could be as simple as asking everyone to sign up at a website ahead of time (it could be more complicated and I think without it becoming subjective, there should be some minimum threshold of on the web work product to qualify for membership.)
2. One vote per member. One vote per comic doesn't make sense. Dave Kelly, as wacky as he is doesn't need 20 votes. If you consider point 1 above, creators can become members based on quantity of experience regardless of whether they do all the work or share the art/writing with other(s).
3. The Awards and/or Association sponsoring them should be called the "something" Comics Association. I like Scott McCloud's distinction between cartooning and comics in his book. Comics are an art form, cartooning is a style. Maybe they could be renamed the Comic Creator's Choice Awards (C cubed for short?). As to the above assn name we should pick something that accurately describes the distinction we are making between ourselves and the offline Reuben awards. I'd say we're "Digital Comics" but I'm sure together we can agree on something.
That's my thoughts for now - look forward to seeing feedback.
R S Tanner
