This is a bit early, but why not?

Postby Gillikin on Sun Sep 30, 2001 1:52 am

This is a bit sooner that I'd wanted to put this up, but I'm going to be needing some illustrators for my book sometime this winter or spring. Not too many pictures, as the more pictures there are, the more expensive the book is to publish. The place where I want to get my book done by is very small, and so all profits go to keeping the books published. I'll make no money, so I'm afraid that you wouldn't either. I've already got a couple of takers to do some pictures (thanx Geej), so it's not like you'd be doing the whole book. It looks like it's going to be about 20 chapters, and the best the place I'm getting my book published by can do is three pictures per chapter, tops. More likely only two. Still, it's better than nothing. So if any of you out there want to help illustrate it, I'd be greatly appreciative, all of you webcomic artists out there. If you want to, I'll give you more details after the book is compleatly finished (I'm about half way through writing in now). Don't worry, I'd give you three months or so to do the pictures, so you aren't too strained. Thanks!
What's that? You'd like to be able to sample the book? Well, I think I can mangage that - Mira of Oz Yes, I will forewarn you, it's an Oz book. But that means for lots of very interesting pictures to draw.
~Chris
P.S. - One more thing, the pictures would have to be line art, nothing fancy. It's hard to reproduce highly shaded art at low cost. Color is out, for the moment as well, at least until I figure out who's going to do the front and back covers. It'd have to be inked, most likely. Like I said, I'll giver you more details after Christmas, or so. As a perk, all artists get to read it before it gets published. Everyone else just gets to read the first three chapters. Sheesh, I'm long winded.
[This message has been edited by Gillikin (edited 09-30-2001).]

The book isn't finished yet, Geejay-sama. Sometime after Christmas is when I hope to have it done, so you won't have to start drawing until mid-summer, for you. And then I'm giving you lots of time to get it done. I'm asking too much as it is. Thanks so very much!

YES, YOU CAN HELP ME! W00T! Thanks so much! Thank you Ringjo, & Emiko Geejay & Christine & Gilshan! I might have to cap it off at 5 people, you guys are only going to be drawing about 15-20 pics as it is. Unless that's too much. I don't know. Em said she'd draw as many as I wanted, but tell me - Is 4 chapter headers (probley 1/4 page) probley 10-12 half pages & one full page too much to ask? I'd also need the title page, the copywrite page & other 'randoms' done. Not to mention the fact that I'm going to need a front and back cover. I have no idea how I'm going to choose who does those two. It really depends on what the company says. It'll take some time, espcially since I've still got another 125 pages left to write, or so. Wish me luck & insperation. I've still got two plot threads to catch up & mesh together. I'd better get to writting. Thanks again! (I sure hope that I don't need the original drawings for the publishers. How the spoon will I get them from The Phillipenes & Austraila? Very long distance mail, I suppose.)
Thanks!

Slight Addendum~
I'm going to stop taking help for the illustrations, now. I think that 6 people is more than enough, for the moment. To those of you who volunteered, I thank you - Emiko, Geejay, Gilshan Wildcat, Christine the Anime Canuk, Ringjo & Dragoness. Next winter, you may get a little bit sick of drawing my characters. Though I suppose for Geejay-sama & Ringjo, it'll be summer. Like I said, I'll set up a page of Oz art in the next month or so, so you guys have soem reference as to the 'standard' characters. Thanks again!

Yet again, more news. For those of you who have read the first two chapters, I've put the third chapter up for your reading. I'm afraid that you're not going to find out what happened to Mira, as the story switches to the second plot thread. I'm eeevil. It also introduces my third main character, Dorothy. Warning, lots of things have happened to Dorothy since the Wizard of Oz. You'll figure that much out in the first page. Here it is, for your reading pleasure - Mira of Oz: Chapter 3
Thanks!

Colored? No, just pen and ink. I'm also afraid that the simpler, the better, in this case, so lots of variations of shading is out. Sorry! The simpler the pictures are to print, the easier it will be for me, and the book might be slightly cheaper. The only things that will be colored will be the front cover, and the back cover. I still have no idea who's going to do that. Gotta go to class, bye! If you need something else, just ask!

Sorry for the rushed answer. When I said no indepth shading, I should have said that I've seen your work. Geejay showed me a couple of samples this summer, and all I can say is wow. It was great. Your shading was wonderful, too, but the problem is, it'd be too much to manage with the company I want to have my book published by. I'm putting up a page of Oz art for you guys, and I've got the first bit up. Only the front page & the magic workers pages are up, but you can have a gander. I'll add more as I'm able to. Espcially since Ringjo seems so eager to get to drawing. www.angelfire.com/az3/gillikin/index.html Thanks again!

Chris,
Ringjo wants me to tell you that he fears that his art style has changed a bit and has become more disney-esque. He is curious to know if this is okay with you.

------------------

Disney-esque? NO! I DEMAND THAT HE CHANGE BACK!! JUST BECAUSE HE'S DOING THIS FOR FREE AND OUT OF THE KINDNESS OF HIS HEART DOESN'T GIVE HIM THE RIGHT TO 'CHANGE' HIS ART STYLE! I'M BEING SARCASTIC! That's fine with me. I'm sure that it'll look great no matter what he does.
I also wanted to tell all of you, I've added lots more Oz pictures to the site I've set up. The Mortalsand the Bestiary sections are both up. Take a look, and tell me what you think, okay? I want's to know if this is what you guys need & stuff. Thanks!

I have this to say - College is a time drain. I've got like no extra time. I'm really trying to write, but I can barely eek out a few pages a week. If you really want to start drawing, you could try drawing your interpretation of Mira and Agatha, and you could practice some of the standard Oz characters. Espcially Dorothy & Pollychrome. The others you may or may not draw, but Dorothy & Polly are a guarentee. Scan them in, and let me see how you do. I'd like to see how other people see Mira. Oh yeah, in the 5th chapter, two characters show up by the names of Emiko & Geejay . . . Can you draw your brother as a faun?

Nope, sorry Eunice, it's an actual honest-to-God book. I've got more than 120 pages handwritten so far, and I'm about half way finished. But since it's an Oz book, illustrations are required. So I asked if people would like to do the illustrations, and I got several takers. Thanks, y'all!

Err...What exactly is this about? Printing a comic book? I'm pretty lost here.
I'm on the process of making a bit of money myself with my mandarin comics and sell it through a local comic mag. Except my mom who still doesn't approve about it. *grumble*
